Akon is the stage name of Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, a Senegalese-American musician, record producer, and entrepreneur.

Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam was born to a Muslim household on April 16, 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri. His mother, Kine Gueye Thiam, is a dancer, and his father, Mor Thiam, plays percussion. Akon spent a major portion of his early life in Senegal.

In his early years, Akon learned to play five instruments, including the drums, guitar, and djembe. Akon’s family relocated to New Jersey when he was seven years old. His parents left him and his older brother in Jersey City when they were in high school.

Early career

After releasing Locked Up, the most well-known track from his 2004 album Trouble, Akon rose to stardom as a musician. When DJ Green Lantern remixed the “Ghetto” track from his album Trouble and included lines from the rappers 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G., which became a radio hit.

He released the single “Lonely” in 2005. The song topped the charts in Australia, the UK, and Germany, in addition to reaching the top five on the Billboard Hot 100. Akon then appeared on two more singles, P-Money’s “keep on Callin” and another with New Zealand rapper Savage on “Moonshine,” which was popular in both Australia and New Zealand.

Akon has admitted to participating in an auto-theft ring and serving four years in prison between 1999 and 2002. The Smoking Gun website debunked Akon’s claim in April 2008 using court records and interviews with detectives engaged in his case. He was not found guilty of any crimes and did not serve jail.

On June 3, 2007, a member of the audience threw something at Akon as he was on stage at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, New York. Akon carried the attendee up to the stage and hurled him back into the crowd from his shoulders after asking the audience to identify the person who had thrown the object. According to the plea agreement in Fishkill Town Court, he completes 65 hours of community service and pays a $250 fine for this behavior.

During his performance on April 12, 2007, in Trinidad, Akon was caught on camera performing an explicitly sexual dance with a female he had invited onstage. It was discovered that the girl was 14 when the video was widely shared online. Later, Akon apologizes for the incident.
