Alex Verdugo| Career

Early Career

Verdugo attended Tucson, Arizona’s Sahuaro High School. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Verdugo in the 2nd round of the 2014 MLB Draft.

Instead of fulfilling his promise to play college baseball at Arizona State University, he signed with the Dodgers.

He hit.347 in 49 games for the Arizona League Dodgers and earned postseason all-star recognition in both the Arizona League and the Baseball America Rookie League.

Minor leagues

Beginning in 2015, he was delegated to the Class-A Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League. After hitting.295 over the course of 101 games, he was chosen for the postseason all-star team.

Verdugo was also late-season promoted to the California League’s Advanced-Class A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, where he played in 23 games and hit.385.

On August 27, he also had a cycle in a game against the Lancaster JetHawks. The organization named him its minor league player of the year.

There, he was chosen as the starting pitcher for the midseason all-star game and a member of the postseason all-star team.

He played in 126 games for the Drillers, hitting.273 with 13 home runs and 63 RBI.

At the end of the season, he was transferred to the Arizona Fall League’s Glendale Desert Dogs, where he batted.140/.213/.233.

Verdugo also participated in the 2017 World Baseball Classic and an exhibition game against Japan’s national baseball team for Mexico.

Beginning the year with the Oklahoma City Dodgers, he was selected to play for the international team in the All-Star Futures Game.

Los Angeles Dodgers

On September 1st, 2017, Verdugo received his first promotion to the major leagues.

That evening against the San Diego Padres, he made his MLB debut as the starting center fielder and went hitless in three at-bats while drawing one walk.

On September 2, he recorded his first MLB hit, a single off of Padres pitcher Clayton Richard. On September 10 against Adam Ottavino of the Colorado Rockies, he hit his first home run in the major leagues.

He participated in 15 games for the Dodgers in 2017 and batted.174/.240/.304 with four hits in 23 at-bats.

While spending the majority of the season with Oklahoma City, where he hit.329., he played in 37 games for the Dodgers, hitting.260.

Verdugo was named to the 2019 Dodgers opening day roster on March 23, 2019. For the Dodgers, he played in 106 games while posting stats.294 batting average, 12 home runs, and 44 RBI.

When A. J. Pollock returned from his injury, he lost playing time but continued to play center field.

Boston Red Sox

The Dodgers dealt Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong to the Boston Red Sox on February 10, 2020, in exchange for Mookie Betts, David Price, and money.

He played in 22 games in left field and 31 games in right field for Boston during the start-delayed 2020 season as a regular corner outfielder.

Verdugo played in 53 games for the 2020 Red Sox, batting.308 with six home runs and 15 RBIs. Verdugo had the worst fielding percentage of any eligible major league outfielder, coming in at.959.

Verdugo played all three positions for Boston’s outfield when the 2021 season got underway. On August 8, he was put on the paternity list, and on August 13, he was reinstated to the group.

He participated in 146 games for Boston during the regular season, batting.289 with 13 home runs and 63 RBIs.

As the Red Sox advanced to the American League Championship Series, he also participated in 11 postseason games, going 13 for 42 (.310) on the night.

Verdugo declared on October 8, 2021, that he wanted to develop into a two-way player by the 2023 season, saying that he did not want to be “Shohei Ohtani where he is starting and all that.”
