One of the most well-known and successful artistic gymnasts of all time is Aliya Mustafina. She has won 45 medals overall—45 each from the Olympic, World, and European Championships.

Early Life, Parents, Sibling, and Education

Aliya Mustafina, aka Queen, was born on September 30, 1994, in the Moscow town of Yegoryevsk. Farhat Mustafina (Father) and Yelena Mustafina had her as their first child (Mother).

Similarly, the gymnast inherited the athlete gene from her father, who was an Olympian. At the 1976 Summer Olympics, he won a bronze medal in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Her mother, on the other hand, is a physics teacher. Aliya has a sister, Nailya, who was a member of Russia’s junior national gymnastics team.

Moving on to her education, There is not much information about her schooling and the level of education she has achieved.

Gymnast Career

Mustafina began gymnastics when she was six years old. She made a breakthrough, however, after competing in and winning the International Gymnix in Montreal in 2007.

She finished second at the Stella Zakharova Cup in Kyiv and the Japan Junior International in Yokohama the same year.

In 200999999, the Russian-born athlete competed in the senior division of the Russian National Championships, winning the all-around event. She finished second on uneven bars, first on the balance beam, and third on the floor.

Mustafina began her senior-level gymnastics career in 2010, but due to an injury, she did not compete in the Russian National Championships that year.

But that year brought Mustafina the fame and attention she deserved, and she began competing internationally.

World Championships

Aliya Mustafina has won 12 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships during her gymnastics career.

The young gymnast made a historic debut at the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, where she was the top qualifier for all rounds of the finals.

After Svetlana Khorkina in 1996, she became the first female gymnast to break the record.

The Russian-born athlete took home five of the competition’s six medals. She took home two gold medals: team and all-around, as well as three silver medals: vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise.

‘Queen’ also won gold in the 2013 World Championship for Balance Beam. In the same year, she also won two bronze medals.

The following season, however, was Aliya’s bronze season, as she won three bronze medals in team, balance beam, and floor exercise.

Aliya won a silver medal for the team at the 2018 Doha World Championships 2018, her final world championships appearance before retiring the following year.

2016 Rio Olympics

Mustafina will undoubtedly represent Russia in the 2016 Rio Olympics following her impressive performance in the 2012 Olympics.

Aliya won one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal this time around.

Mustafina took bronze in the overall competition. She finished second to USA’s Simon Biles and Aly Raisman with a score of 58.66.

She became the only ninth gymnast in Olympic history to win an all-around medal twice in a row.

In the team finale, the Russian team finished second and won the silver medal, repeating their Olympic performance from 2012.

Mustafina also defended her 2012 title by winning gold in individual uneven bars. She became the first female Olympic gold medalist after winning two gold medals in the same event.

Retirement

Aliya Mustafina will retire from gymnastics on June 8, 2021. Due to her injuries, the Russian-born competitor had recently withdrawn from the competition.

Aliya, on the other hand, wanted to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before retiring, but her dream of competing in the final Olympics was dashed due to the Covid pandemic.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were postponed due to the Covid pandemic, and it was unclear when the Olympics would take place. Aliya announced her retirement one month before the Olympic Games in 2021.

Aliya, on the other hand, has no regrets because she retired as a gymnast at the age of 26 with two Olympic gold medals and 12 World Championships.

Aliya Mustafina retired early despite having reached the pinnacle of her career due to a series of injuries that kept her from competing.

The two-time Olympic gymnast may have retired as an athlete, but her passion for gymnasts has led her to work as a coach for the gymnasts.

Aliya was named as the Junior National Team’s acting head coach.

She is currently serving as the acting head coach because she lacks the necessary coaching experience to be appointed as the permanent head coach.

Aliya also stated that she is grateful to her ex-husband for the lovely gift Alice received.
