He signed a two-year, $6 million contract with the Washington Capitals on July 4, 2017. On October 24, 2017, while playing against the Florida Panthers, Burakovsky suffered a thumb injury that required surgery.

On February 26, 2021, he played in his 400th NHL game, a 3-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes. On May 10, 2021, against the Vegas Golden Knights, he scored his 100th career goal.
