Andrew R. Jassy was born in New York City on January 13th, 1968. Jassy is of Jewish and Hungarian descent. At the New York law firm Dewey Ballantine, his father held the position of senior partner.

After earning his degree, Jassy spent five years managing projects for the collectibles company MBI before starting his MBA program. Then he founded and then shut down a business with an MBI colleague. As marketing managers, Jassy and a few other Harvard MBA coworkers joined Amazon in 1997. The Amazon Web Services cloud computing platform was conceptualized by him and Jeff Bezos in 2003, and it became operational in 2006.

In March 2016, Jassy was given the Financial Times’ Person of the Year honor. Jassy was promoted from senior vice president to the chief executive officer of Amazon Web Services a month later.

As CEO of Amazon Web Services in 2020, Jassy got a base salary of $175,000 along with a restricted stock unit award of 4,023 shares of Amazon. It will vest starting in 2023 and was valued at $12,104,844.93 as of July 26, 2020.

When the company’s Q4 earnings were released on February 2, 2021, Bezos officially named Jassy as his successor as CEO. The handover date was decided on May 26. The transfer was expected to happen in Q3 2021. Jassy assumed control of the company in 1994, the same day that Bezos launched it. In his first year as CEO of Amazon, he was paid a total of $212.7 million, a considerable rise from his 2020 salary.
