It was a very basic and uncomplicated childhood for Austin and his half-brother Wyatt.

They relocated to his stepfather’s ranch and took on a full-time position as employees to take care of their horses, cows, goats, and poultry.

They were ordered to break apart ice in the water tanks during the winter and had to be up by 6 a.m. for laborious work.

Ekeler recollects that he detested the experience to the fullest and would be held accountable for any mistakes.

Education

Austin attended Eaton High School and participated in college football. Football was his haven. At the time, he didn’t even enjoy football.

He was so eager to leave that he thought playing football would be his way out. Austin gave football his undivided attention.

While his senior year saw him sprint for 2,400 yards and 42 touchdowns, few Division I schools showed any interest. He went looking for Division II schools since he wanted to change his position.

Finally, Western State University in Colorado wanted him in the same position even though he had never heard of them.

Austin recalls being perplexed when he learned that despite having the most rushing yards nationwide and being ranked number 22, no one was interested in signing him.
