During his high school years, Ben also met Charles Oakley, a former NBA player who served as his career mentor.
Career in College
Ben Wallace played basketball in college for the Cuyahoga Community College team and the Victoria Union Panthers.
He displayed his abilities while spending two seasons playing for Cuyahoga in Cleveland.
Wallace achieved national recognition in just one season with his 6.9 blocks and 17.0 rebounds per game averages.
Ben pondered moving to another top basketball team, but he didn’t believe he could make it to the NBA from where he was.
He was fortunately accepted as a youngster by the Victoria Union Panthers thanks to Chris Oakley’s recommendation.
In his final two collegiate years, Ben improved his performance for the Panthers, earning accolades like First-team All-CIAA.
With an average of 10.0 rebounds and 13.4 points per game, he completed his senior year.
Career as a Professional
Ben Wallace entered the 1996 NBA draft following his graduation from college, but sadly, no NBA teams selected him.
To play in the Italian Basketball League, he initially signed with the Viola Reggio Calabria before leaving the nation.
The Washington Wizards (formerly Washington Bullets), an NBA team, extended him an invitation to join their squad that same year, and he eventually made his way back to the United States.
His rookie season performance, however, was forgettable because they offered him very little playing time.
Ben averaged 1.1 points and 1.7 rebounds per game throughout the 34 games he participated in.
For two more seasons, he was under the Wizards’ ownership, but in 1999, they traded him to the Orlando Magic.

When Wallace played for the Detroit Pistons in the 2001–02 season, his performance astounded everyone. Despite his meager scoring, he averaged a lot of rebounds and blocks.
He pulled down 13.0 rebounds per game in his first season with the Pistons. The following five seasons of his tenure with the Pistons saw him win numerous honors and awards.
While he was playing for the Pistons, the NBA nominated him for nearly every defensive player and team award.
The NBA championship ring he won in 2004 with the Pistons was also his most notable accomplishment.
He moreover played for two additional teams after that before joining the Pistons once again in 2009. He was still a terrific rebounder even though his performance dipped in later years.
In 2012, Ben Wallace formally ended his playing career.

Wallace has experienced legal issues on a few occasions in his life.
He was first detained in 2011 after Detroit police discovered him operating a vehicle while intoxicated. When they discovered he had a gun, the situation got worse.
Later, he revealed his grave error and that he had had a gun that was registered in his wife’s name. Ben explained that he had carried it with him to Michigan as personal protection.
He entered a plea guilty to the allegations made against him, and the court then gave him a probationary period of one year and a year of community service.
Similarly, in 2014, the Henrico County police detained him once more after he fled the scene after ramming his car into a wooden fence.
The court had sentenced him to a year in prison, but after just two days, he was freed on bail.
