Paul Wight as Big Show is a popular American professional wrestler as well as an actor. He is well-known for his tenure with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) from 1995 to 1999 as The Giant and with WWE from 1999 to 2021 under the ring name The Big Show.

Early Life, Family, and Education

He was born on 8th February 1972, in Aiken, the largest city and county seat of Aiken County, South Carolina. Big Show was born to his father, Paul Wight Sr., and his mother whose name is still unknown.

Big Show holds American nationality and belongs to a Caucasian white ethnic background and his horoscope is Aquarius.

He grew up his whole childhood in Aiken, South Carolina. At an early age, he played basketball for Wichita State University.

Early Career

Moving towards her career, Big Show began his professional career as a wrestler. After graduation, he held several off-the-wall jobs, such as bouncing and bounty hunting.

During that time, he and Danny Bonaduce met in a live microphone amateur contest on his morning radio show. Wight came to know Hulk Hogan through the Bonaduce.

Likewise, he entertains the crowd at a promotional basketball game for WCW. After that, Hogan realized that Wight had potential and later talked to Eric Bischoff about him.

Initially, Big Show wanted to join WWF but they rejected him as he had no training.

Later on, he reached out to Larry Sharpe’s Monster Factory and paid them $5,000 for training. Hence, Sharpe was suffering from gout at the time and Wight ended up training under Johnny Polo.

Professional Career

He made his first professional debut on 3rd December 1994, for World Wrestling Association in Clementon, New Jersey, in a loss against WWA Heavyweight Champion Frank Finnegan.

Meanwhile, his first match in WWA turned out to be his only match for the promotion as well. After that, he signed a lucrative contract with WCW in 1995.

Later on, he debuted under the ring name The Giant and had his first match for the promotion at the 1995 Halloween Havoc, against WCW World Heavyweight Champion Hogan.

After that, he joined the stable in 1996 and was part of the stable until December.

At that time, he won the battle royal at World War 3 and tried to challenge Hogan for a World Heavyweight title match.

Wight had become disillusioned with his prospect in WCW in 1999. Meanwhile, he had realized that he was making significantly lesser money than the main wrestlers and let his contract with the promotion expire.

He became a free agent on 8th February 1999 and later he joined WWF after signing a ten-year contract with the promotion and later adopted the ring name ‘Big Show’. Additionally, he feuded with The Rock, Kane, The Undertaker, and McMahon himself and was briefly in alliance with The Undertaker.

Big Show won the WWF Championship for the first time, defeating The Rock and Triple H at the 1999 Survivor Series. After that, he came back at the 2001 Royal Rumble and played a significant role in The Invasion storyline.

More Career

Big Show defeated Brock Lesnar to become the WWE Champion for the second time at the 2002 Survivor Series. After that, he lost the belt a month later to Kurt Angle.
Additionally, he won the United States Championship from Eddie Guerrero at the 2003 No Mercy.
Meanwhile, he was defeated by Japanese sumo legend Akebono in a worked sumo match at WrestleMania 21.

He began working with Kane in October 2005. They won the World Tag Team Championship but later start a feud that would result in two no-contest matches. Furthermore, he won the ECW World Heavyweight Championship on 4th July 2006.

Later on, he returned to WWE and in 2011, reunited with Kane. Additionally, he won the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time at the 2011 TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs.

After taking a leave from professional wrestling in September 2017, he had surgery. Furthermore, he returned on 4th April 2018, to induct his long-time friend Mark Henry into the WWE Hall of Fame.

At present, he is signed to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as an in-ring performer, and as a commentator for its web television show, AEW Dark: Elevation, under his real name of Paul Wight.

Acting Career

Big Show made his film debut in the 1996 sports drama ‘Reggie’s Prayer’, portraying a character named Mr. Portola.

Although, he worked with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sinbad, and Phil Hartman in the Christmas family action comedy-drama ‘Jingle All the Way’.

He appeared in two films in 1998. His first movie was the action-comedy ‘McKinsey’s Island’, in which he co-starred with Hulk Hogan.

After that, he then portrayed Adam Sandler’s idol, Captain Insano, in the highly successful sports comedy ‘The Waterboy’. Meanwhile, his next film was the 2006 family film ‘Little Hercules in 3-D’.

Additionally, Wight was cast as Brick Hughes in the 2010 action-comedy ‘MacGruber’. He acted in many movies such as ‘Vendetta’ in 2015 ‘And countdown’ in 2016.

Although, he also voiced a character based on his professional wrestling personality in ‘The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania!

Furthermore, Wight has made guest appearances on several TV shows, including ‘Shasta McNasty’ (1999), ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ (2004), and ‘Psych’ (2013).

Injury

Paul Wight underwent surgery that successfully prevented further enlargement of his pituitary gland in 1990. Although, he had a successful hip operation in 2017 after a 3.5 cm hole had developed in his hip.

He lost some weight during his treatment, but thanks to an improved diet and fitness exercise Big Show has a very proportional physique.

The police caught him for allegedly exposing a female motel employee in December 1998. However, he was let go due to a lack of evidence. For the second time, he was caught for another assault in March 1999.

Although, the case was filed by Robert Sawyer who said Paul his jaw in 1998. Additionally, he also added that this wrestler abused him verbally and threatened him too.
