In 1981, McKenzie departed The Sault Star and moved back to Toronto in hopes to land a job in the sports section at one of the major newspapers.
The Globe and Mail’s sports division offered him a job as a copy editor, but there were no full-time positions available.
McKenzie received a job offer as The Hockey News’ chief editor in 1982. McKenzie worked at the magazine for nine years before beginning a hockey column at the Toronto Star that lasted until 1998.

When he was working for the Toronto Star, McKenzie was asked to leave by Phil Esposito as he was reporting from the Tampa Bay Lightning locker room following a defeat.
Following her refusal, there was a fight, and McKenzie reported the incident to Toronto police, alleging assault.
After spending three years working for The Hockey News again, where he took part in their half-hour portions on The Sports Network (TSN), McKenzie was eventually hired as a game analyst for the Canadian Hockey League.
In 2000, he was eventually given the chance to join the broadcasting staff of TSN.

McKenzie won the Gemini Award for Best Studio Analyst in appreciation of his reporting skills for his work on the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship: Gold Final.
