Robert Lee Jr. is a stand-up comedian, actor, and podcaster from the United States of America. Lee appeared on MADtv from 2001 to 2009, and he co-starred alongside Jenna Fischer and Oliver Hudson in the ABC single-camera sitcom Splitting Up Together from 2018 to 2019.
Bobby Lee | Early Life, Family, and Education
Lee was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 17, 1971, to Korean immigrant parents Jeanie and Robert Lee. He grew up with his younger brother in Poway, California. His parents had clothing stores in Escondido and Encinitas, California.
He went to Painted Rock Elementary, Twin Peaks Middle, and Poway High Schools. In high school, he was a member of a breakdancing squad. Lee left his parents’ home at the age of 18 and worked in San Diego eateries and coffee shops while attending Palomar College, which he later dropped out of.

How did he start his career?
Before pursuing a career in comedy, Lee worked in a variety of cafes and restaurants. Within a year of doing regular comedy engagements, he was able to open for Pauly Shore and Carlos Mencia. Lee eventually became a regular at Pauly Shore’s mother, Mitzi’s, Los Angeles comedy club, and The Comedy Store.
MADtv
Lee became the show’s first and only Asian cast member when she joined the MADtv cast in 2001. He has publicly claimed that he detested playing the characters of Bae Sung and Connie Chung, referring to them as “Average Asian” sketches.
In a podcast interview conducted by fellow actor and comedian Joe Rogan on February 1, 2011, Lee stated that his parents barely spoke to him during the first few years he performed stand-up comedy, but after appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, his father called and inquired how much he had to pay to get on the show, then apologized for not supporting his son’s humorous career.
TigerBelly is a video podcast hosted by Bobby Lee and his ex-partner Khalyla Kuhn, which debuted in 2015 and has featured guests such as technical engineer Gilbert Galon and producer George Kimmel. After participating as a guest on the DVDASA podcast, Kuhn became interested in creating her own podcasts.
Erik Griffin’s podcast
All Things Comedy swiftly signed Lee and Erik Griffin’s podcast pitch, but they were unable to meet. She was in the hospital for several weeks and was unable to resume her nursing work. She needed something to keep her busy, so she started her own podcast. Lee appeared on her show, and the connection was so powerful that Lee decided to focus solely on podcasts with Kuhn.
Lee remained with the ensemble until the show was terminated in 2009, and she had a brief appearance when MADtv was resurrected on The CW in 2016.
