In 1990, he also played for the West Indies in his delayed Test debut against Pakistan, hitting 44 and 5. One month prior, he made his ODI debut against Pakistan, scoring 11 runs.

In January 1993, Lara scored 277 points against Australia in Sydney. The West Indies went on to win the next two Tests and the series 2-1 as a result of this player’s first Test century in his fifth match.

With just 427 balls, Lara broke the record for most balls in a game with 501 in 474 minutes.

In his innings, he hit 308 boundaries, 10 sixes, and 62 fours.

Professional Career

Lara led the West Indies cricket team from 1998 to 1999, during which time they suffered their first defeat at the hands of South Africa.

In the four-Test series that followed, they were tied 2-2 against Australia thanks to Lara’s 546 runs, which included three centuries and one double century.

He scored 153* in the third Test’s second innings as the West Indies chased down 311 with one wicket left after scoring 213 in the second Test’s second innings in Kingston.

Both times, he received the Man of the Match and Man of the Series awards.

Lara, the captain of the West Indies, played 131 tests for the team while scoring 11,953 runs overall.

Return of Brian Lara prior to the finale

Lara stated he still desired to sign a deal to play Twenty20 cricket after talks between Surrey and Lara for the 2010 Friends Provident t20 fell down.

He joined Southern Rocks, a Zimbabwean team, before the end of the year to play in the 2010–2011 Stanbic Bank 20 Series.

He made a half-century in his Twenty20 debut for the Rocks and first ever game, leading the team with 65 runs.

In his next two innings, he scored 34 more runs before quitting the game due to “commitments elsewhere”.

Brian Lara managed to secure the highest reserve price of $400,000 ahead of the IPL players’ auction in early January 2011.

Despite not having played competitive cricket for four years, after expressing his interest in competing in the 2011 fourth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, no franchise purchased him.

He participated in the Bicentenary Celebration game at Lord’s in July 2014 for the MCC team. Brian Lara joined The Bennett Hotel Centurions, a team for Newcastle C&S D5, on November 18, 2016.

 Retirement

Lara announced his retirement from all international cricket on April 19, 2007, making the West Indies vs. England game on April 21 his final outing for his country.

After a disastrous mix-up with Marlon Samuels for 18, he was run out, and England went on to win the game by one wicket.

He declared that this would be his final performance in One Day Internationals prior to the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

Lara consented to join the Indian Cricket League on July 23, 2007. He served as the Mumbai Champs’ previous captain.

Lara volunteered to participate in the 2008 domestic season for his Trinidadian team. He hadn’t represented Trinidad in a game in the previous two years.

Career In Coaching

Brian Lara was hired in December 2021 to serve as the Sunrisers Hyderabad team’s batting coach and strategic advisor for the IPL 2022 season.
