American retired basketball player, Charles Henry Bibby played for the National Basketball Association. Likely, Henry Bibby is a well-known former basketball player and coach from the United States.

Early Life, Education & Family

Charles Henry Bibby was born to Evelyn Bibby and Charlie Bibby on November 24, 1949.

He was born in the town of Franklinton, North Carolina. He has two brothers named James (Jim) Blair Bibby.

Unfortunately, Henry Bibby lost both of his parents. To elaborate, his father died in 1983, and his mother died in 2003.

Although the causes of death for both parents were not revealed, Henry’s mother’s health had been failing for some time.

Evelyn died at the age of 83, and a funeral ceremony was held at Franklinton’s First Baptist Church.

Jim Bibby, his older brother, was a Major League Baseball pitcher.

Jim pitched for clubs such as the St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and Pittsburgh Pirates from 1972 to 1984.

Jim was the only Fayetteville State University graduate to make it to the major leagues.

During his career, he was also a member of the 1979 World Series Champions and the 1990 Senior Professional Baseball Association.

Jim also became a coach after concluding his pitching career, spending 16 years as a minor-league pitching coach.

Unfortunately, Jim Bibby died on February 16, 2010, at the age of 65 at a Lynchburg, Virginia hospital from bone cancer.

Education

After graduating from Person-Albion High School, Henry Bibby enrolled in the University of California.

Furthermore, it is not surprising that Bibby began his athletic career at a young age.

To demonstrate, Bibby began his basketball career with his high school’s basketball team and then joined the UCLA men’s basketball team.

As a freshman at UCLA, Bibby shared MVP honors with guard Andy Hill.

Likely, Bibby was named the team’s starting point guard by head coach John Wooden.

He guided the team to three consecutive NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championships in 1970, 1971, and 1972 during his career.

Bibby was an All-American until the end of his senior year since he was one of just four players to start NCAA championship teams.

Professional Career

The New York Knicks selected Henry Bibby in the fourth round as the 11th selection and 58th overall.

He also played for the Philadelphia 76ers for four years before moving on to the Lancaster Lightning and San Diego Clippers for a single season.

Bibby averaged 675 games a season, scoring 8.6 points, grabbing 2.3 rebounds, and dishing out 3.3 assists.

Coaching Career

Bibby found another way to continue in the NBA as a coach shortly after retiring as a player.

He apparently began coaching in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA).

Bibby spent a year as an assistant coach with his old team, the Lancaster Lightning, before joining the Arizona Wildcats.

He coached the squad for three years, and as an assistant coach, he won a CBA title.

Following that, he worked with many other clubs while coaching the Winnipeg Thunder.

In the meantime, he coached the Baltimore Lightning, Springfield Fame, New Jersey Jammers, Savannah Spirits / Tulsa Fast Breakers, and Oklahoma City Cavalry.

Later, after working with the men’s basketball team at the University of Southern California, he made his coaching debut in 1996. (USC).

During his nine seasons with the squad, he had an overall won-loss record of 131-111.

In April 2005, he took over as head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

However, after only 28 games, he was hired as an assistant coach by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Not to add, Bibby only worked for one season before being appointed as an assistant coach by the Memphis Grizzlies.

He then joined the Detroit Pistons and is now with the Tijuana Zonkeys.

Bibby is well-known for his court vision and ability to anticipate game events.

In general, Bibby is more concerned with playing an effective game than with exceptional gaming. Not to add that he is great at transitions.

Having said that, the father and son reunited in 2002 and are now somewhat together.

It did take time and difficult years for their relationship to heal. Finally, they began making phone calls, exchanging presents, and other such activities.

According to Henry, he was determined to save his relationship with his son at whatever cost, and he now gives presents to his grandkids.
