American professional basketball player Chinanu Onuaku plays for Dinamo Sassari in the Lega Basket Serie A in Italy. In addition, he played college basketball for the Louisville Cardinals.

Chinanu Onuaku was born in Lanham, Maryland, USA on November 1, 1996. Onuaku has dreamed of playing in the NBA since he was a child.

Two Years of College

Onuaku played collegiate basketball for the University of Louisville for two seasons. He appeared in 35 games as a freshman, starting 26 of them.

Aside from that, he averaged 3.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.

Later in his sophomore season, Onuaku started 29 of 31 games. Furthermore, he became the ideal replacement for Montrezl Harrell.

Similarly, he averaged 9.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game. He was later named All-ACC honorable mention and All-ACC defensive team for his performance.

Onuaku finished his two years with the Cardinals with a 49-17 record. Similarly, in 66 games, he averaged 6.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.6 blocks.

Professional Career

Onuaku declared for the NBA draft in May 2016. Onuaku was selected as the 37th overall pick by the Houston Rockets on June 23, 2016. He also participated in the Rockets’ summer league in 2016.

Onuaku made his NBA debut on December 26, 2016, in a 131-115 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Onuaku had six points and three rebounds in his debut.

Furthermore, he spent the majority of his time with G-League affiliate Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Onuaku was suspended on May 1, 2017, for pushing match officials.

This incident occurred in the final seconds of the Raptors 905’s 122-96 loss.

Onuaku went on to record his first career triple-double on November 22, 2017. In a 138-124 victory over Memphis Hustle. He led the Vipers with 12 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 assists.

National Team Career

U-19 World Cup

Onuaku was a member of the USA Basketball team that won gold at the 2015 U-19 World Cup in Greece. The USA perfected with a 7-0 record in seven games.

Furthermore, Onuaku started six games with an average of 4.6 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 1.7 BPG.

In the championship game against Croatia, he had six points, eight rebounds, and four blocks in a 79-71 overtime win.

Onuaku was named to the USA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers squad on February 19, 2019. 
He later started both matches against Panama and Argentina.
