It was rumored that the Portugal coach Fernando Santos and Cristiano were not on good terms as per the sources.
Similarly, he was benched for the first time in this World Cup against Switzerland in the round of 16. He was brought in the second half of the match and fortunately, Portugal won the match.
But, Fernando’s trick didn’t work this time as he and the team again decided Ronaldo not to play. However, Portugal lost the match against Morocco but Santos doesn’t regret his decision. When he was asked if he regrets the decision for benching Cristiano Ronaldo, he stated,
“No, I don’t think so, no regrets. I think this was a team which played very well against Switzerland. Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player, he came in when we thought it was necessary, so no regrets.”
Not only Cristiano Ronaldo but his wife, Georgina Rodriguez also wrote her heart out regarding the match. Likewise, she also stated about the manager, Fernando Santos after Portugal’s loss.
As we already know Portugal got knocked out by the African team in the semi-final. Georgina said,
“You shouldn’t give your face to those who don’t deserve it. Today your friend and coach made the wrong decision. That friend for whom you have so many words of admiration and respect. The same one who, when putting you on the field, saw how everything changed, but it was too late.”
