Shortly after receiving his undergraduate degree, the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the first round of the NFL draft. He quickly progressed to become one of Dallas’ greatest fullbacks of all time.

Former teammate Brandon Hugh “Babe” Laufenberg gave him the endearing nickname “Moose” because of his unusual height.

In 1992, 1993, and 1995,  Johnston won the Super Bowl with the  Dallas Cowboys. He is the only fullback who has ever been chosen for the Pro Bowl as well.

In 1993 and 1994, he was picked twice to play in the Pro Bowl. He also has 22 touchdowns on 753 yards of rushing and 2,227 yards of receiving.

After sustaining a neck injury in 1997, Johnston announced his retirement at the end of the 1999 campaign. He played for three Super Bowl champion teams.

After Players Inc Radio moved to Fox Sports Radio in 2003, Johnston started listening in. The event was sponsored by NFL Players Inc.

Since 2013, Johnston has worked as a color analyst with Dick Stockton and Kenny Albert. Before that, from 2001 to 2006 and from 2007 to 2013, Johnston collaborated with Stockton and Albert on the second broadcast team.

He served as an analyst for “Total Access” on the NFL Network up until 2012.

Beginning with Pat Summerall and eventually switching to Kenny Albert, Johnston also began calling the college Cotton Bowl Classic game for Fox in 2009.
