About Delonte West |  Family and Education

Delonte West was born on July 26, 1983, in Washington, D.C., to parents Dmitri West and Delphina Addison.

Delonte’s childhood wasn’t quite the bed of roses considering he grew up in poverty. When he was a small child, his parents were divorced and had to move to an undesirable area.

Dmitri West Jr. and Danielle West, the guard’s two siblings, were reared by the 6 feet 4-inch guard’s mother alone. Even though they were destitute, they described their upbringing as “happy-poor.”

Delonte had a difficult beginning because it was clear from a young age that his mental health wasn’t in good shape.

He was frequently ridiculed by the youngsters in the area since he was born a multiracial child with red hair and other distinguishing features.

The only thing that kept him going, aside from the entire tumultuous scenario back home, was his love and enthusiasm for basketball.

When he sustained a leg injury at the age of 12, it became clear that the only reason he attended school was to be able to take part in the games; he began skipping class because he couldn’t.

Delonte, who was 14 at the time, struggled with depression and made several suicide attempts as a result of everything that was happening, which required him to frequently visit the hospital.

Delphina, a single mother, thought it would be best for Delonte to live with his father because she was concerned and irritated by his behavior.

Delonte’s father, on the other hand, would not show much concern for his situation, and things would get worse when Delonte encountered numerous individuals at his new school who led him down the road of drug and alcohol abuse.

Delonte West’s Career in High School and College

In Greenbelt, Maryland, at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Delonte developed a reputation as a basketball star.

In his senior year, he averaged 20.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.1 steals, and 3.9 assists per game, earning him the Washington Post All-Met Basketball Player of the Year award.

Delonte and his team advanced to the Maryland 4A championship, but despite his best effort, they were defeated 70-58.

Despite his sadness, he believed that college would offer better opportunities. Alongside Jameer Nelson, he joined Saint Joseph’s University.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks finished the regular season 27-1 and qualified for the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

After the season, the Hawks had a 30-2 record.

Delonte dropped out of school in his junior year after being chosen by the Boston Celtics with the 24th overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft.

Professional Life and Career

A turning moment in the American point guard’s career occurred when the Boston Celtics recognized him and selected him with the 24th overall choice in the 2004 NBA draft.

He had a career-high 31 points and 12 free throws made in the Boston Celtics’ victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in double overtime.

West has experience playing professionally for both the Texas Legends of the NBA G League and the Fujian Xunxing and Shangai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association.

With the Mavericks, he announced the conclusion of his NBA basketball career in 2015.

He was captured on camera getting pummeled in the streets of Washington, DC, as of January 2020.

Controversies

West frequently finds himself in the news spotlight due to various controversies, such as incarceration, arrest warrants, and police charges.

Let’s examine some of the debates that received more attention.

  • In October 2009, Awad, Delonte’s first wife, accused him of using domestic abuse.
  • Three guns—a handgun, a revolver, and a shotgun—were purportedly discovered by the police during an investigation. November 20 marked his court appearance.

  • When West played for the Mavericks, he frequently yelled at the officials and his teammates. He later learned that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder through his therapist.
  • West made news once more in October 2021. He was imprisoned for knocking on a Florida police station’s doors. While clutching two alcohol bottles in his hand, he also called the police names.

Although Caressa Suzzette Madden’s early years are not entirely known, we do know that she stood behind Delonte no matter what.

Since Madden came from a middle-class household and had no public exposure before dating the NBA player, people most often refer to her as Delonte West’s wife.

As sweet as it gets, it is said that West proposed to Madden by slicing a piece of a jump rope from the garage and wrapping it around her finger because, due to his persistent financial crisis, he could not purchase a ring.

For those who are interested, Madden is West’s second wife. They have two children together, one of which is Cast West.

His father describes Delonte’s first wife, Kimberly Ashley Awad, as his “college love.”
