Engelland was one of many kids who had dreams of one day dominating the ice as a hockey player.

Deryk Engelland | Professional Life and Career

The Western Hockey League was Engelland’s junior ice hockey league (WHL). A premier junior ice hockey league, the WHL is established in both North America and Europe.

Engelland has five seasons of junior hockey experience with the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors.

He originally appeared in two contests in 1998-1999. In the following four seasons, he established himself as a team regular defenseman.

17 points were scored by Engelland in the 2001–2002 seasons. Furthermore, during the 2002–2003 seasons, he accrued 199 penalty minutes.

Engelland was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the sixth round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, 194th overall. He did not, however, participate in any official games for the group.

During the 2003–2004 East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) season, Engelland played professionally for the Las Vegas Wranglers.

During the same season, he also participated in the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Lowell Lock Monsters.

NHL Profession and Beyond

For the Hershey Bears in the 2007 Calder Cup playoffs, Engelland put up an outstanding effort. The Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL became aware of him.

The Pittsburgh Penguins later agreed to a contract with Engelland.

Engelland also competed for the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Throughout the AHL seasons of 2007 and 2008, he played for the Scranton Penguins.

He took part in every one of the 80 regular-season games. 23 postseason games were also played by Engelland. Additionally, he helped the squad go to the Calder Cup final.

Similar to this, he participated in all 80 of the Scranton Penguins’ regular-season games in 2008-2009.

Additionally, he began the 2009–2010 AHL season with the team. He completed his goal of playing in 171 straight games.

On November 6, 2009, a game took place in which the record was broken. Then Engelland was sent to Pittsburgh for the first time.


With the Pittsburgh Pirates, Engelland agreed to a three-year pact that will last through the 2013–14 seasons. He received an average salary of $566,700 every season as part of the pact.

Flames of Calgary

Next season, Engelland left the Pittsburgh Penguins. He then decided to join the rebuilding Calgary Flames in the hopes of gaining more responsibility.

With the Calgary Flames, he inked a three-year deal for $2.9 million annually.

Over his former income, the sum was multiplied by five. The fact that his former earnings were among the worst-value contracts signed during the 2014 free-agency season was also criticized.

During Troy Brouwer’s absence, Engelland got the chance to lead the Calgary Flames as an alternative captain. Due to a broken finger, Brouwer was placed on injured reserve.

Golden Knights of Vegas

After the 2017 season, Engelland’s deal with the Calgary Flames came to an end. He was thus left unprotected in a free-agent position at the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft.

On June 21, 2017, the Las Vegas native was formally selected by the Vegas Golden Knights.

He agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract with the Vegas Golden Knights. Then he announced that he would resume playing hockey professionally in the city.

The Stanley Cup Final was reached by the Vegas Golden Knights. The 35-year-old defenseman Engelland made a significant contribution.

At the time, Vegas lacked a proper captain. The undisputed authority was assumed by Engelland. He served as an alternate captain and had an “A” on his jersey.

As the Western Conference champion, he also accepted the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl. It belongs to the captain of the team.

He later agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million agreement with the Vegas Golden Knights that will last through the 2018–19 season. On January 15, 2018, it was signed.

On April 23, 2018, the Vegas Golden Knights proposed Engelland as a candidate for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

He was suggested as the player who most demonstrated leadership abilities and civic responsibility.

On April 24, 2018, the Mark Messier Leadership Award announced him as a finalist. He also succeeded on June 20.

On July 23, 2019, the Vegas Golden Knights re-signed Engelland to a $700,000-a-year contract agreement.
