An American professional baseball pitcher, Devin Smeltzer was born on  September 7, 1995, in Voorhees Township, New Jersey, United States, to his parents Tim and Christina Smeltzer.

He subsequently enrolled at Florida Gulf Coast University so that he could represent the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in college baseball.

Smeltzer was chosen by the San Diego Padres in the 33rd round of the 2014 MLB draft, but he opted to play for the Eagles instead. His earned run average was 6.19 and he had a 1-4 record.

Smeltzer competed in collegiate baseball for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2015.

He was successful in throwing a no-hitter for nine innings, but he fell one walk short of a perfect game. Additionally, he was selected as the co-MVP of the league for the all-star game.

Smeltzer played for the Eagles for a season before transferring to San Jacinto College to sharpen his skills ahead of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Up until that time, he had a 9-3 record, a 1.18 ERA, and 128 strikeouts with the San Jacinto team. He decided to accept a baseball scholarship in the interim and attend Texas Tech University for his junior year.

 Professional Career

In the fifth round of the 2016 MLB June Amateur Draft, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected Smeltzer, who had just graduated from San Jacinto College (Houston, TX).

He passed over Texas in favor of the Dodgers because of their $500,000 signing bonus.

Smeltzer was assigned to the Arizona Dodgers of the Rookie Division of the Arizona League, where he worked 10.2 innings of relief baseball, went 0-2 with a 7.59 ERA, and posted a record.

He was transferred once more to the Great Lakes Loons of the Class A Midwest League in 2017.

In 2017, Smeltzer initially started eleven games for the Lakes. Later, he signed with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League’s Class A-Advanced division, where he played in fifteen games.

For the two teams, he finished with a 7-7 record and a 4.17 ERA. He changed teams again for the 2018 campaign, this time joining the Tulsa Drillers of the Class AA Texas League.


In exchange for Smeltzer, Logan Forsythe, and Luke Raley, the Dodgers acquired Brian Dozier from the Minnesota Twins on July 31, 2018.

Thankfully, Jeremy Zoll, the Twins’ associate general manager, was there to support him. Smeltzer was acquainted with Zoll because he was a Dodger.

Smeltzer was swiftly assigned by the Twins to the Southern League for the remainder of the season.

He played in 33 games. In games versus Tulsa and Chattanooga, he made 14 starts. His record was 5-5, and his ERA was 4.52.

Smeltzer began a new campaign with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League, going 3-1 with a 0.60 ERA in 30 innings.

On May 2, 2019, he was promoted to the Rochester Red Wings of the Class AAA International League.

On May 28, 2019, he faced Milwaukee and pitched six innings against them, allowing three hits, no runs, and seven strikeouts.
