He sustained a shoulder injury against the Binghamton Devils, forcing him to miss the rest of the 2017–18 campaign.
Toews’ parent team, the New York Islanders, had nonetheless had enough of him and offered him a new, two-year contract.
Toews then began the 2018–19 campaign with the Tigers before being called up to the Islanders squad after 24 games.
The Canadian defenceman went on to play 48 games for the New York-based team, recording five goals, 18 points, and 13 assists.
