The former pitcher began his professional career with the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent.

He soon developed into a top pitcher while playing for Class AAA Pawtucket. He struck out 158 batters and had a 2.03 ERA. It was the International League’s highest-scoring goal.

He established a no-hitter pitching record in Peninsula that same year.
