In 2006, After completing high school, Cerrone started his career in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) at the Freedom gym which was located in Colorado.

He fought with Jamie Varner who was the WEC Lightweight Champion at a WEC bout in 2009. Varner won the Fight of the Night award.

Cerrone used an illegal knee on Varner’s brow temple while he was lying on the floor. Cerrone and Varner refused to accept defeat and agreed on another flight. At last, Cerrone won the fight unanimously, winning each of the rounds.

In December 2009, Cerrone faced Ed Ratcliff in the main event of the WEC 45 event. He won, earning the title of “Fight of the Night,” but later lost to Benson Henderson for the WEC Lightweight Championship in April 2010.

Throughout 2012 and 2013, he had a notable number of wins and losses, including notable fights against Melvin Guillard, which he won by knockout in round 1.

The performance earned him his first career KO victory, as well as Fight of the Night and Knockout of the Night honors.

He debuted in the welterweight division in 2016 against Tim Means. Means surrendered in round one, giving him victory. Cerrone received another Performance of the Night bonus award for his efforts. In 2016, he defeated Patrick Côté and Rick Story for the Performance of the Night bonus award.

In 2018, Cerrone defeated Yancy Medeiros by TKO in the first round at the UFC Austin event but lost to Leon Edwards at UFC Fight Night.

Returning to the lightweight division in 2019, he won the UFC Fight Night showdown against Al Laquinta unanimously and was named fight of the night.

On January 28, 2020, he was defeated by TKO in round one against Conor McGregor in a welterweight match that headlined the UFC.

Donald Cerrone’s career has included three fights of the night, five Performance of the Night bonus awards, three knockouts of the night awards, and two submissions of the night awards.

Cerrone had to be revived three times and was in a coma for two weeks after a motocross accident in 2004, in which his stomach was also cut open.

Eight years later, the crash had taken its toll on his body, and he was in excruciating pain ahead of his fight with Jeremy Stephens.
