Drew Allison Carey is an American actor, comedian, and game show host. After serving in the United States Marine Corps and performing stand-up comedy, he became famous in his sitcom, The Drew Carey Show.
Early Life, Family, and Education
Lewis and Beulah Carey welcomed Carey into the world on May 23, 1958. The youngest of three brothers, he was raised in Cleveland, Ohio’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood (Neil was born in 1946 and passed away in 2010; Roger was born in 1952).
In the marching band at James Ford Rhodes High School, where Drew graduated in 1975, he played the cornet and trumpet.
He completed his education at Kent State University (KSU) and joined the fraternity Delta Tau Delta. Due to his subpar academic achievement, he was expelled twice.
Three years later, he departed KSU. Carey joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1980 after graduating from college and worked as a field radio operator in Ohio’s 25th Marine Regiment for six years.

Early Career
He followed David Lawrence’s advice to visit the library and choose books on joke writing to launch his comedy career in 1985. His first public encounter came as a result of his participation in the 1988 Star Search.
Carey made his television debut on Late Night with David Letterman the same year he joined the 14th Annual Young Comedians Special on HBO.
Carey made a fleeting appearance in the 1993 film Coneheads as a cab passenger. In 1994, Carey and John Caponera shared a lead role in the NBC sitcom The Good Life.
The Drew Carey Show
Carey and Helford wrote the script and oversaw its production for The Drew Carey Show. In the sitcom, a fictionalized version of Carey and his gang of childhood friends contended with the stresses of life and work.
The show premiered on ABC on September 13th, 1995. In his autobiographies, Carey vented his frustration at the censors for forbidding him from using the filthy humor that was a mainstay of his stand-up routines.
Carey was one of four performers featured in each episode over the 233 episodes the show had throughout its nine-year run.
While still a cast member of The Drew Carey Show, Carey began hosting the American version of the improv comedy program “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” in 1998. For the WB’s 2004–2005 prime time schedule, Carey co–produced and appeared in his Green Screen Show, Whose Line Is It Anyway? spinoff.

Films And Other Appearances
Carey appeared in three films in 2005: the animated film Robots, where he provided the voice of the character Crank; the celebrity-filled film The Aristocrats, where he repeated a filthy joke; and the documentary Fuck, where he was interviewed.
When Carey was selected to host the CBS game show pilot Power of 10, he began presenting game shows in April of that year. From August 7, 2007, until January 23, 2008, the program aired twice weekly throughout the late summer and early fall.
On August 15, 2007, he taped his first Price Is Right episode, and on October 15, 2007, his shows began.
In April 2011, Carey launched his improv program Drew Carey’s Improv-A-Ganza. It was filmed in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and premiered on April 11.
On March 4, 2014, it was announced on Good Morning America that Carey would participate in season 18 of Dancing with the Stars.
An NCIS episode from 2018 featured Carey as a former Marine. He played sergeant, which was the last job he held in real life.
In 2021, Carey made her Celebrity Wheel of Fortune debut alongside Teri Hatcher and Chrissy Metz. He vanquished his opponents in the first bonus round, but he was unable to solve the puzzle in the final bonus round.
In 2022, Carey celebrated his fifteenth year as a presenter on “The Price Is Right.”
