College Career

Elfrid Payton attended Jefferson Parish, Louisiana’s John Ehret High School. He chose Louisiana Lafayette after a promising 2011–12 freshman season. Moreover, Elfrid Payton visited the university in 2012–13 as a sophomore.

He recorded 15.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.4 steal on average per game. The First Team of the Sun Belt Conference was named with Elfrid Payton on it.

Also, Payton won the competition with a 9-0 record and a team gold medal. He improved to rank among the top defenders in college basketball as a junior in 2013–14. He now averaged 19.2 points, 5.9 assists, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game.

Payton was named the National Defensive Player of the Year after winning the Lefty Driesell Award at the end of the season. However, he forfeited his last year of college eligibility when he declared for the NBA draft in April 2014.

National Team Career

For the American team competing in the 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, Payton was the final surprise.

He averaged 6.1 points and 3.3 rebounds over nine tournament games.

Professional Career

Orlando Magic

Elfrid Payton was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the number 10 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft in June.

He was later traded to the Orlando Magic on draft night in exchange for Dario Saric, a future first-round pick, and a future second-round pick.

A rookie-scale contract was agreed upon by Payton and the Orlando Magic. Payton averaged 22 points and 12 assists in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies in January 2015, which was his best performance of the year.

Moreover, Payton was chosen as an Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for January and a Rising Stars Challenge participant. He recorded his first triple-double on March 18 against the Dallas Mavericks with 15 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds.

Also, He repeated the triple-double on March 20 in a similar fashion making him the first Magic player to ever complete three straight triple-doubles.

He became the first NBA rookie to accomplish this accomplishment since Antoine Walker in 1997.

Payton scored a career-high 24 points in a 104-101 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in November 2015.

He scored his third triple-double with 20 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds in a March 2016 loss to the Detroit Pistons. His career-high 28 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists came against the Utah Jazz in January 2017.

He keeps adding triple-double scores as well. He achieved his fourth triple-double in ten games.

In an April game against the Brooklyn Nets, he averaged 20 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds to earn his sixth triple-double of the season.

The 2017–18 season saw Elfrid Payton miss eight games due to a left hamstring injury.

Phoenix Suns

In February 2018, Elfrid Payton was traded to the Phoenix Suns in return for a second-round pick in 2019.

In his Phoenix Suns debut, he faced off against the Denver Nuggets, averaging 19 points, 9 assists, and 6 rebounds.

Payton finished with a triple-double of 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists in the following game against the Utah Jazz.

One of the rare players on the Phoenix Suns who consistently recorded a triple-double was him.

New Orleans Pelicans

Payton committed to the New Orleans Pelicans in July 2018.

In the New Orleans Pelicans’ 131-112 victory over the Houston Rockets in October 2018, he averaged 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. His debut game with the squad was that one.

He recorded his first triple-double for the Pelicans with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. His 11th career triple-double.

He was out for nearly six weeks in November with a fractured finger and a sprained right ankle.

After missing 22 games due to injury, he made his comeback in December against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He achieved his second consecutive triple-double with 14 points, a career-high 15 rebounds, and 11 points in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

He became the first member of the New Orleans Pelicans to record a triple-double in back-to-back games since Chris Paul in 2008

Payton joined Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook in consecutive games with a triple-double (since 1983–84).

Two days later, Payton defeated the Dallas Mavericks 129-125 in overtime while tallying his fifth consecutive triple-double with 19 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds.

With his sixth triple-double, he also tied Chris Paul for the most points scored in a season in franchise history.

New York Knicks

Payton and the New York Knicks reached a two-year contract in July 2019. He was out for 17 straight games at the start of the season.

With 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 15 assists in a 139-134 overtime victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in February 2020, Payton recorded his 17th triple-double of his career.

In November 2020, the New York Knicks released him. According to reports, Payton has extended his contract with the New York Knicks by one year.

Back to Phoenix Suns

Elfrid Payton agreed to a deal with the Phoenix Suns in August 2021. Since 2021, he has been a part of the Phoenix Suns.
