Gabby Douglas

Gabby Douglas is the first African American to win the individual all-around event in the Olympics. She also received gold medals for the United States in team events at the Summer Olympics in 2012 and 2016.

Douglas was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia on December 31, 1995, to Timothy Douglas & Natalie Hawkins.

Her first gymnastics experience occurred at the age of three when she performed a straight cartwheel utilizing a technique taught to her by her elder sister, Arielle, a former athlete.

Douglas’ mother permitted Gabby to begin regular gymnastics courses at the age of six, at the urging of Gabby’s sister.

She was awarded Virginia State Gymnastics Champion only two years later, in 2004.

Her parents permitted her to relocate to Iowa for more training under the direction of Coach Liang Chow. Gabby’s nationality is American.

Further, Gabby remained with her aunt and trained for years, and she still counts that time as a stepping stone in her professional life, despite the fact that she was only fourteen at the time.

How did Gabby Douglas start her professional career?

Gabby finished tenth in her first national competition, the US Classic in Houston in 2008.  Douglas was sidelined by injury for the rest of the year, missing most of the important contests.

Except for the United States, she did not have a very memorable year in 2010. She won a silver medal in the Junior National Championships. After that year, she had an injury and used the time to improve her bar abilities, which her coach saw as her one weakness.

She found senior success when she won a gold medal in the City of Jesolo Trophy. Following that year, in the World Championship 2011 in Tokyo, she and her colleagues won gold.

Her victory in the 2012 Olympic trials earned her a spot on the national squad for the London Summer Olympics.

Further, Gabby drew the attention of national team supervisor Martha Karoyli.

Following her amazing Olympic triumph, she returned to Chow for training. And she was trained under a new coach, Kittie Carpenter. She avoided tournaments for the majority of 2013 and 2014, instead focusing on honing her talents.

In 2015, she made a comeback by competing in the City of Jesolo Trophy, where she finished fourth in the overall championship and second in the overall U.S. Games from the past.

Moreover, she was chosen to the senior national squad, where she finished second in the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastic Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

Despite finishing seventh in the Olympic trials, she was able to clinch a seat in the 2016 Olympics. But she did not disappoint, playing a significant part in the US team’s gold medal win.

Consequently, Her individual event performance was lackluster, as she finished seventh in the uneven bars final. She was eliminated from the all-around event owing to some complicated regulations.

Gabby Douglas | Retirement

Gabby Douglas retired from competition in 2016 after two successful Olympic campaigns. She has not yet formally confirmed her retirement, although she did not participate in the US Olympic team tryouts for Tokyo 2020.

Gabby Douglas | Injury

Douglas had a fracture in her wrist’s growth plate in 2009. She was unable to participate and so missed the 2009 Covergirl US Classic due to this injury.
