After their parents Miriam and Max passed away, Weinstein and his brother used the money from their concert promotion company to found the independent film distribution company Miramax in the late 1970s.
The rights to two British documentaries of benefit performances recorded for Amnesty International were purchased by Miramax in the early 1980s.
In close collaboration with Martin Lewis, the producer of the original movies, the Weinstein brothers combined the two films into a single work that was created exclusively for the American market.
