Her maternal grandmother came from a German-Jewish family, just like her paternal grandmother, while her other grandparents were English with Methodist religious roots.

In the 1970s, Hunt started acting roles as a young child. She had early roles as Murray Slaughter’s daughter on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, as the protagonist’s daughter in Rollercoaster (1977), with Lindsay Wagner in an episode of The Bionic Woman, in the episode “Omega” of Ark II, and as a regular on The Swiss Family Robinson. Two of Hunt’s four films from 2000, the comic Dr. T & the Women and the tragic Pay It Forward, were released in October. She starred opposite Richard Gere in the first movie as one of the women who embody the life of a wealthy physician.

At the same time, Kevin Spacey played the love interest of an elementary school teacher who has been physically and emotionally damaged. Roger Ebert praised her for her performance despite calling the film Pay It Forward “quite emotionally manipulative.”

Hunt made her film directorial debut with the film Then She Found Me. She is also featured as a 39-year-old Brooklyn elementary school teacher who is approached by a flamboyant local talk show personality played by Bette Midler and told that she is her biological mother.

After reading Elinor Lipman’s book, she repeatedly tried to interest studios in the project. Still, she was unsuccessful, so she decided to start writing the screenplay and gather money for her production.

According to Ruthe Stein of the San Francisco Chronicle, when Then She Found Me was first released, you would imagine that frontloading it with so much narrative would cause it to play like a soap opera. However, Hunt avoids this result in the movie in two different ways.

In the Drama Every Day, Hunt portrayed one half of a married couple that was split apart by mounting duties (2010). According to the Los Angeles Times, the film “comes as a reminder of [Hunt’s] ability for understatement and a want to see more of her.”

In the 2011 biographical drama Soul Surfer, which was based on the life of the Hawaiian champion surfer, she played Bethany Hamilton’s mother. Her most notable film since The Curse of the Jade Scorpion in 2001, Soul Surfer, made $47.1 million in foreign sales.

In the 2012 movie The Sessions, which starred John Hawkes and William H. Macy, Hunt portrayed sex surrogate Cheryl Cohen-Greene. For the role, Hunt had to perform a lot of full-frontal nudity scenes.
