About Henrik Lundqvist | Family and Education
On March 2, 1982, in the Swedish town of Re, in the Jämtland region, the athlete Henrik Lundqvist was born. His twin brother Joel is also named Joel.
The twins learned how to skate on an outdoor ice rink that their kindergarten teachers built during the winter.
They were more interested in ice hockey even though their area was known for its alpine skiing.
Their father, Peter, accompanied them to the Scandinavium arena in Gothenburg to watch Västra Frölunda HC play.
They regarded it as one of their favorite memories, and it heightened their enthusiasm for ice hockey.

With Järpens IF, Henrik and Joel began participating in organized hockey games in 1990. The two boys did join Rögle BK though after their family relocated to Bastad, Skne, in 1993.
When Janne Karlsson, the manager of Frölunda’s junior squad, first showed an interest in scouting Henrik and Joel, they were taking part in the 1998 Scandinavium Cup.
Henrik Lundqvist played guitar in the Swedish band Box Play before entering the professional ice hockey league.
Lundqvist had a nice night even though they only played Swedish rock songs due to his passion for music.
Professional Life and Career
With the Frölunda Hockey Club, Lundqvist made his Swedish Hockey League debut on September 21, 2000. However, Brynäs IF won the first game against Frölunda.
Lundqvist helped his team win the following game against IF Björklöven by turning away 18 shots except for one goal.
On the other hand, he did not start for most of the season and Pat Jablonski took his place on the squad.

He played for IF Mölndal Hockey instead in HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden’s second-highest ice hockey league.
After participating in nine games, he joined the Frölunda junior ice hockey team, and in December 2000, he competed in the J20 SuperElit.
His coaches became concerned as a result of his disappointing performance, but by the 2001 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship, he had recovered.
Lundqvist earned the Honken Trophy as Sweden’s top goalkeeper in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
Rangers of New York: rookie campaign
In the NHL’s 2005–06 season, Henrik Lundqvist joined the New York Rangers as Kevin Weekes’ backup.
However, Lundqvist made his NHL debut on October 8, 2005, after Weekes was wounded in the second game.

Lundqvist won his first NHL game against the New Jersey Devils on October 13 at Madison Square Garden.
On October 16, the New York Rangers defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 5-1. Lundqvist gained the title “King Henrik” after getting praise for his play from both his audience and the New York media.
In 2006, Lundqvist was chosen for the NHL All-Rookie Team. He finished his first season as a Ranger with a record-breaking 30 victories.

In a contest against the Dallas Stars in December 2006, King Henrik went off against his identical brother, Joel.
In the 2007–2008 season, Lundqvist participated in eight shootouts.

In Montreal for the 2009 NHL All-Star Game, Lundqvist participated in the Elimination Shootout.
Henrik Lundqvist made history on March 12, 2009, as he finished his first four NHL seasons with at least 30 victories.
At the 2012 NHL Awards in Las Vegas, King Henrik finally won the Vezina Trophy after being nominated in each of the first three seasons.
He was selected the Rangers’ Most Valuable Player for five straight seasons by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) (2006-07 to 2010-11).
Injuries
Lundqvist sustained an injury to his neck’s blood vessel during his game against the Carolina Hurricanes on January 31, 2015. He missed a handful of the season’s games as a result.
Lundqvist made a comeback and started against the Boston Bruins on March 28, but the Rangers fell short 4-2 in that contest.
Although Henrik started the remaining games of the 2015 postseason, the Rangers’ offense struggled.

On January 16, 2016, King Henrik achieved a new milestone in his career by becoming the NHL goalie with the most consecutive 20-win seasons (11), a record.
Additionally, he achieved his 60th shutout when playing the St. Louis Blues.
After defeating the Colorado Avalanche on February 11, 2017, Lundqvist became the goalie with the fastest 400 career victories.
On November 25, 2019, he earned his 455th victory, moving him up to the sixth position in NHL history in terms of victories.
Change teams to Washington Capitals
The Rangers decided to end Lundqvist’s contract early on September 29, 2020.
After that, the player was a free agent and signed a $1.5 million contract with the Washington Capitals in October.
Henrik was, unfortunately, unable to participate in the 2020–21 season due to pericarditis, which resulted in an irregular pulse. In January 2021, he additionally underwent open heart surgery.

Late in February, Lundqvist went back to practice, although he later made the decision not to play in the 2020–21 campaign.
On August 20, 2021, King Henrik delivered a statement about his retirement.
As a result, the Rangers declared that jersey number 30 will be retired in his honor. On January 28, 2022, the jersey will be formally retired.
