American radio and television host, comedian, and author Howard Stern is best known for his radio show, “The Howard Stern Show”.

Howard Stern | Early Life, Family, and Education

Howard Allan Stern was born on January 12, 1954, in the Jackson Heights section of Queens, New York City. In New York, his mother Ray held a receptionist position. After enlisting in the Army during World War II, his father was a radio engineer at WHOM in Manhattan.

Additionally, he co-owned Aura Recording, Inc., a Manhattan recording studio producing animated movies and advertisements. Ellen is his older sister. When Stern was a year old, his family relocated to Long Island, New York.

Stern has had a passion for the radio business since he was five years old. In the family’s basement recording studio, which his father had set up in Roosevelt, New York, Stern produced fictitious radio broadcasts. He attended Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School.

When Stern was 15 years old, his family moved to Rockville Center, New York. He applied to South Side High School in the fall of 1969. He graduated from high school in 1972. Stern began taking classes at Boston University that fall.

He began working at the college radio station WTBU during his second year of college. In 1974, he was enrolled in Boston University’s School of Public Communications. Stern graduated with honors from Boston University in May 1976.

Howard Stern | Career

From 1976 through 1982, Stern worked the morning show at WWDC in Washington, D.C., WCCC in Hartford, Connecticut, and WRNW in Briarcliff Manor, New York. During this time, he developed his on-air persona.

Stern relocated to a radio station in Washington, D.C., and began to organize a new show there. He turned down a one-year deal from WWDC in favor of joining WNBC in 1982. Stern worked the afternoon shift at WNBC in New York City from 1982 until 1985.

He began his 20-year employment at WXRK in New York City in 1985. His morning program, “The Howard Stern Show,” entered 60 markets’ syndication in 1986, exposing him to 20 million listeners.

Private Parts

Stern received a $1 million deal with Simon & Schuster in 1993 for his biography “Private Parts.” When the book was published in October 1993, it became popular right away. The whole first print run of 225,000 copies was sold within hours of being on sale.

In just five days after its release, “Private Parts” shattered the Simon & Schuster record for the fastest-selling book. The book held the top spot on the “New York Times” Best-Seller list for its first 20 weeks there.

Stern’s “Private Parts” was made into a feature film and released in 1997. The movie included Stern and numerous members of his radio show staff, including Robin Quivers, Fed Norris, Gary Dell’Abate, and Jackie Martling, who all played themselves.

The movie “Private Parts” premiered on March 7th, 1997, in the United States. With an opening weekend revenue of $14.6 million, the movie debuted at the top of the American box office. At the end of its theatrical run, it had a domestic gross of $41.2 million.

Other Works

In 1995, Stern also penned “Miss America,” and in 2019, “Howard Stern Comes Again.”

He has also served as executive producer of the television sitcom Son of the Beach(2000-2002).

Stern was chosen as Piers Morgan’s replacement for the seventh season of “America’s Got Talent” in 2011. He continued as a judge till the tenth season’s finale in September 2015.

In 1998, he was nominated for Golden Satellite Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy, or Musical for his role in Private Parts(1997). Additionally in the same year, he was the winner of the Blockbuster Entertainment Award as Favorite Male Newcomer in Private Parts.

In 2000, he was the winner of the Special Achievement Award for Adult Video News Awards.

For $52 million, Stern and his wife acquired a 12-bedroom estate with 3.25 acres of land in Palm Beach, Florida. Only a short distance from the beach is Howard Stern’s 19,000-square-foot condominium in Palm Beach, Florida.

The spectacular one-story home includes 12 and a half bathrooms in addition to five bedrooms. The home has stunning columns, well-planted grounds, a wall to prevent the ocean from flooding the grass, and a stunning pool tucked away in the center of the property.

While attending Boston University, Stern and Alison Berns were introduced by a common acquaintance. They exchanged vows in Brookline, Massachusetts, on June 4, 1978. Both of them were 24.

Emily Beth, Debra Jennifer, and Ashley Jade are their three daughters, born in 1983, 1986, and respectively (1993). In October 1999, they divorced.  Their divorce was settled peacefully in 2001.

In the few months following his breakup with Alison and meeting Beth Ostrosky, Stern dated models Angie Everhart and Robin Givens. In 2000, Stern began dating model and TV personality Ostrosky. At the Le Cirque restaurant in New York City, they were engaged on February 14, 2007, and they wed on October 3, 2008.

When the FCC fined station owners $2.5 million for having what it considered to be indecent content, Stern became the most penalized radio personality in history.

Stern has OCD. He wrote in his 1995 book “Miss America” about his battle with OCD. His parents have been utilizing Transcendental Mediation to control it since the early 1970s.

Stern converted to pescetarianism in 2012.

Stern and Ostrosky are among those who support the North Shore Animal League of America. The two have collectively fostered close to 900 cats.
