Inside Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s rare ‘date night’ at NYC gala: ‘We Don’t Get Out Much’

For Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, Tuesday night in New York City was a date!

Prince Harry reportedly said to the crowd at the 2022 Ripple of Hope Awards, “This is our date night, so thank you all for sharing our date night with us.”

Harry, 38, claimed he and his wife were taking advantage of a rare night out without their two children at the Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award Gala where the couple was recognized.

“I actually thought we were just going on a date night, so I find it quite weird that we’re sharing the room with 1,500 people,” Harry made a joke while sharing the platform with Meghan, 41, and Kerry Kennedy.

He continued, “We don’t get out much ’cause our kids are so small and young, so this is completely unexpected. It’s nice to share date night with all of you — thank you for coming!”

According to the person who was seated next to the couple, Harry appeared to be completely smitten with Meghan. All night long, he couldn’t stop looking at her. She was also unable to quit grinning.

“[Harry] said, ‘I’m always inspired by my wife, and I’m always looking at my wife.’”according to the Page Six source.

Additionally, according to the same insider, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived for their “date” in soggy New York City, “On the way in, Harry held the umbrella for Meghan.”

As they walked the red carpet together, Harry also held Meghan’s hand. They skipped any interviews.

She’s very serious but charming, another gala observer told Page Six about the couple. “He is totally in her thrall. She’s freed him up from his royal life.”

A celebrity insider at the event commented that Meghan hadn’t changed when the pair stepped onto the red carpet:

“Meghan hasn’t changed … She still knows how to work the red carpet, and she made sure to look back at all the photographers. Just like she did during her ‘Suits’ days.”

For Meghan and Harry and distinguished guests, there was a single, long table inside the charity event. One [long] ‘king’ table was put up, and everyone sat at it.

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, Don Lemon, Keegan-Michael Key, Gayle King, Libbie Mugrabi, Alfre Woodard, Karen Duffy, and Henry Schleiff were at the event.

The invitation to the dinner said that “cocktail/business attire is acceptable” for the dress code. Nevertheless, a source told that “Meghan chose to wear an elegant formal gown,” while Harry opted for a navy blue suit.

She also wore the aquamarine ring that Princess Diana wore as her “something blue” at her wedding reception in 2018, according to Page Six Style.

Meghan and Harry accepted the Ripple of Hope Award for their efforts in racial justice, and mental health. As well as other social-impact initiatives through their Archewell foundation. While 3-year-old Archie Harrison and 18-month-old Lilibet Diana were at home in California.

Previous appearances

Following their appearance at the UN in July, when Harry delivered a special message in recognition of Nelson Mandela Day, the couple is now back in New York City.

During their visit to the World Trade Center’s One World Observatory in September 2021, former mayor Bill de Blasio, his wife Chirlane McCray, their son Dante de Blasio, and Governor Kathy Hochul joined Harry and Meghan

Additionally, they had meetings with the U.S. United Nations ambassador Students in the second grade at P.S. read Linda Thomas-book Greenfield’s children’s The Bench with Meghan. Harlem’s 123 Mahalia Jackson School.

The two also spoke out on stage at Global Citizen Live in Central Park about the need for COVID-19 vaccine equity around the world.

Kennedy, 63, previously stated to the Spanish publication Vanitatis that Harry and Meghan represented the “moral courage” against injustice.  Kennedy’s father famously urged for in his renowned Ripple of Hope speech at University of Cape Town in South Africa. More than 50 years ago when apartheid ruled.

Alec Baldwin served as the event’s emcee, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was also there. He was given the Ripple of Hope Award for his brave leadership during the Russian invasion.

Frank Baker, a co-founder of Siris, Brian Moynihan, CEO of Bank of America, and Michael Polsky, CEO of Invenergy, were fellow 2022 laureates.

The celebration also honored Bill Russell, a civil rights leader and NBA icon, posthumously.

They made an appearance at the dinner before their Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan” debuted this week.
