Early Life and Family
On March 20, 1980, Jamal was born to his parents Venora Skinner and Clyde Crawford. He grew up along with her two sisters named Lisa Crawford and Lori Brown.
Jamal went to the University of Michigan after completing his high school education at Rainer Beach High School. He has played basketball since high school and has a strong passion for the game.

The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Jamal eighth overall in the 2000 NBA Draft. He was eventually traded to the Chicago Bulls on the draft day along with the rights to Chris Mihm.
Jamal had trouble with his shot in his first season with the Bulls, making only 35.2% of his field goal attempts.
Despite this, the young player ten times managed to score in the double digits. The American player’s NBA season in 2001-2002 was limited to 23 games.
Despite this, he improved across the board, posting averages of 9.3 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while converting 44.8 percent of his 3-point attempts.
Jamal’s averages per game over the course of 80 games rose to 10.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and one steal.
His last NBA season in Chicago was 2003–04. In his third and final game as a Bull, he scored 50 points against the Toronto Raptors on April 11, 2004.

Phoenix Suns
On October 17, 2018, Jamal agreed to terms with the Phoenix Suns. He also had a career-high 14 assists on December 17 in a 128-110 victory over the New York Knicks.
On January 6, 2019, Jamal joined Dell Curry as the only NBA player with 11,000+ career points as a reserve after scoring 16 points in a 119-113 loss to the Charlotte Hornets.
Brooklyn Nets
For the remainder of the 2019–20 season, the Brooklyn Nets signed Jamal on July 9, 2020, as a backup player.
He was signed following the withdrawal of four Nets players from the NBA relaunch in Orlando due to positive COVID-19 testing.
Jamal made his club debut on August 4, 2020, scoring five points and dishing out three assists in five minutes of play.
