Jamal Murray is a professional basketball player from Canada who plays for the National Basketball Association’s Denver Nuggets.

Early Life and Family

On February 23, Jamal Murray was born and raised in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada to his parents Roger and Sylvia Murray. Likewise, while his father was born in Jamaica, his mother was from Syria.

He did, however, relocate to Canada with his parents when he was 9 years old. Lamar Murray, Jamal’s younger brother, is another sibling.

Roger Murray himself had a background in sports. He grew up playing basketball and running on fields and tracks.

Jamal could play basketball for countless hours as a three-year-old. He began playing in the league for 10-year-olds when he was 6 years old.

At age seven, he made 30 baskets in a row with the assistance and direction of his father. His father also introduced him to a range of development practices like kung fu training and meditation.

At age 12 to 13, Murray finally started playing pick-up games against top high school and college athletes.

Basketball Career

Murray initially enrolled in Grand River Collegiate Institute in Kitchener, where he grew up. Later, he changed schools and enrolled at Orangeville Prep in Orangeville, Ontario.

He joined the school’s team while his father was the assistant coach there. He teamed up with Thon Marker to defeat numerous American schools and bring victory to them.

Murray was named MVP during his game in the 2013 Jordan Brand Classic International Game, making him the second Canadian winner after Duane Notice.

Jamal also had a game-high 30 points and was named MVP for the second time during the 2015 Nike Hoop Summit.

He competed in the BioSteel All-Canadian Basketball Game in 2015 against top high school players and was awarded MVP.

Later, he participated in amateur basketball (AAU).

College Career

Jamal started his college career on June 24, 2015. He made a commitment to play for Coach John Calipari’s Kentucky team.

In his first season, he played in 36 games and averaged 20.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while shooting 40.8% from beyond the arc.

He was later named a third-team All-American by the Associated Press following his freshman season.

In a similar vein, his effort and diligence earned him a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team and the first team All-SEC.

Murray’s 20.0 points per game average, the most for a freshman in Kentucky program history, is one of his most important historical moments.

Professional Career

Jamal started his professional career in June 2016 after the Denver Nuggets selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

He began playing for the Nuggets as a rookie on August 9th, 2016.

He had a career-high 19 points in a loss for the Portland Trail Blazers in a game they lost 112-105 in November 2016.

In a match against the Chicago Bulls, he surpassed that total by scoring 24 points in a 110-107 victory.

His performance during the games in November and December earned him the title of Western Conference Rookie of the Month.

He defeated the New Orleans Pelicans on April 7, 2017, 122-106, scoring a career-high 30 points.

He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team at the end of the season as a result of his accomplishments.

Murray scored a lot of points during his various games, which helped his team win. Murray hasn’t experienced any other injuries during his career besides two separate sprained ankles.

From January 17 to February 6, 2018, he missed about six games due to a sprained left ankle.

Nevertheless, he scored 19 points and dished out 11 assists in a 135-130 victory over the Brooklyn Nets after reentering the game.

Jamal had a playoff career-high 34 points in Game 3 of the Nuggets’ second-round loss to the Trail Blazers (140-137, quadruple-overtime).

Murray began his five-year, $170 million contract extension with the Denver Nuggets on the first day of the free agency period.

Murray suffered an ankle sprain for the second time, missing ten games as a result. He had one of the best runs of his career after coming back, scoring 31.3 points on average over a four-game span.

National Team Career

At the 2013 FIBA America’s Under-16 Championships in Uruguay, Murray competed for Canada and helped the squad win a bronze medal.

In a similar vein, he represented Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games. The team was able to return home with a silver medal thanks to Murray’s assistance.
