Jessie Bates III| Early Life, Family, Education

On February 26, 1997, Jessie Bates was born to his single mother Theresa Trotter. He had six siblings growing up: his younger brother Von, his younger sister Aaliyah, and his step-siblings Donavan, Nate, Kameron, and Ariana.

Trotter who raised her children working two jobs claimed that Bates’ father was infrequently involved in their lives.

Despite long work hours and little free time with her kids, Trotter took on the duty of taking Bates to his practices, including Pop Warner football, minor league baseball, and hoops.

He went to his first NFL game when he was in the fifth grade thanks to Trotter’s dual role. Bates’ a prospective football coach at Snider High School, could clearly see the bond of the mother-son duo.

In February 2015, he switched his pledge to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons from the Toledo Rockets, where he had previously committed to play collegiate football.

College career

As a redshirt freshman, Bates took part in each of Wake Forest’s 13 games in 2016. He was selected for the ACC All-Freshman First-team, the All-ACC Second-team, and the USA Today Freshman All-America Team following the season.

In addition, he recorded 100 tackles (3.5 for loss), five interceptions (two of which were returned for touchdowns), 18 punt returns for 73 yards, four pass deflections, and one forced fumble.

Bates participated in 11 of Wake Forest’s 13 games in 2017 as a redshirt sophomore, missing two due to injury.

He recorded 79 tackles (six for loss), six pass deflections, five punt returns for 161 yards and one touchdown, one forced fumble, and eight punt returns for 161 yards over those 11 games.

On January 4, 2018, Jessie Bates planned to forego his remaining eligibility and enter the 2018 NFL Draft. He took part in the Indianapolis NFL Scouting Combine and completed the majority of the tasks.

Bates chose not to perform the bench press, though. Among the safety competitors, Bates did remarkably well, finishing third in the 60-yard shuttle, fourth in the three-cone drill, and fifth in the short shuttle.

He also had the tenth-best vertical jump among players in his position group and the ninth-best time in the 40-yard sprint.

Jessie was rated by DRAFTSCOUT.COM as the third-best free safety prospect overall, by sports illustrated as the fifth-best protection, and by NFL analyst Mike Mayock as the fourth-best safety in the draft.

Additionally, he made his debut during the Cincinnati Bengals’ 34-23 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the season opener.

He made eight solo tackles in that contest.

2019

In the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 27-3 defeat in week 4, teammate Nick Vigil forced a fumble that Bates recovered. In week 10’s 49-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Bates made his first career interception off Robert Griffin III.

During the Oakland Raiders’ 17-10 defeat, Bates recorded an interception of Derek Carr. Bates intercepted his third pass of the season, thrown by Baker Mayfield, in week 14’s 29-17 defeat to the Cleveland Browns, matching his rookie season’s total.

2020-2022

Bates intercepted a ball from Philip Rivers in Week 6’s 31-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts to register his first interception of the season. Bates caught his third catch of the year, thrown by Alex Smith, in Week 11’s 20-9 defeat to the Washington Football Team.

After the season, Bates was selected for the second team of All-Pros.

Bates now has two playoff interceptions after he picked off Matthew Stafford in the end zone in Super Bowl LVI.

After signing it on August 23, Bates received the franchise tag from the Bengals on March 7, 2022.
