On the 7th of July, 1966, James Christopher Gaffigan was born in Elgin, Illinois. His parents are Michael A. Gaffigan, a banker and the former president and CEO of the Mercantile National Bank of Indiana, and Marcia Mitchell, a charity worker, and fundraiser.
He is the sixth child in a family of six, and he and his siblings were all raised in Chesterton, Indiana. His mother passed away from cancer in 1990, and his father from the same disease in 1999.
Gaffigan frequently viewed comic programs like “Saturday Night Live” when he was a teenager. His father, who was the first member of the family to attend college, frequently urged his kids to do the same and pursue more stable employment. Gaffigan, though, was already five years old when he decided he wanted to pursue an acting career.
Jim played football as a student at La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana. He subsequently continued his schooling at Purdue University and, after just one year, transferred to Georgetown University. He earned a finance degree from Georgetown in 1988.

Early Career
Following his college graduation, Gaffigan briefly worked as a litigation consultant. He later relocated to New York in 1990 to seek a career in comedy. David Letterman, who is also from Indiana, served as a major source of inspiration for him at this time.
Later, after attending a stand-up seminar, he developed a love for stand-up and began performing at comedy clubs. His career’s first seven years were devoted to experimenting with various styles.
He auditioned for “The Late Show with David Letterman” numerous times over a six-year period, and eventually was given the opportunity to perform on the show.

In addition to his own program, “The Jim Gaffigan Show,” he appeared on the television programs “Welcome to New York” (2000–2001), “The Ellen Show” (2001–2002), and “My Boys” (2006–2009). (2015-2016).

Author Gaffigan has written several best-selling books. Dad Is Fat, his debut novel, debuted on The New York Times Best Sellers List at No. 5 in 2013. The first whole sentence that his oldest kid, then four or five, wrote on a dry-erase board provided the inspiration for the book’s title.
The book is a collection of writings concerning the author’s childhood and the parenting of his children. In June 2013, Gaffigan agreed to write a second volume of humorous essays for Crown Publishing. In 2014, the book “Food: A Love Story” was released in the fall.
