Jhonny had excellent success in stock car racing for amateurs. Richard Childress Racing extended an offer to him to drive the No. 21 Chevy, which is supported by Rockwell Automation, in five Busch Series contests.

Additionally, he made his series debut in Richmond in the Autolite Fram 250 and placed sixth. In addition, in three of his five Busch starts, he placed in the top 15.

In the 2003 Season, Sauter made his Winston Cup debut. He also took part in five Pontiac Grand Prix races for Morgan-McClure Motorsports.

Because of this, Sauter came in third place and won the championship at Homestead. In his professional career, Johnny had never before won in any of the three NASCAR divisions.

By finishing third in the standings in 2018, he lost the title once more, making history repeat itself.
