As the Oakland Raiders new head coach, Jon Gruden brings back one of the team’s most illustrious and accomplished coaches from the team’s illustrious past.

Gruden, who took over as the Raiders’ head coach for the first time 20 years ago, spent four seasons with the team between 1998 and 2001.

About Jon Gruden |  Family and Education

Jon Gruden was born on August 17, 1963, in Sandusky, Ohio, into a family of Slovenian ancestry.

Later, Jim, his father, worked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a quarterbacks coach, player staff director, and professional regional football scout.

However, Jon’s father, Jay, was a player and coach in the Arena Football League who most recently served as the Washington Redskins’ head coach.

We were surprised to learn that James, his brother, is a radiologist at Weill Cornell Medicine.

In addition to being a growing Cleveland Browns fan, Gruden was raised as a Roman Catholic.

At the age of 15, he enrolled in Clay High School in South Bend, Indiana, the city that is home to Notre Dame University and where his father also served as Dan Devine’s assistant coach.

After graduating in 1981, Jon enrolled in Ohio’s New Concord campus of Muskingum College.

He was the Flyers’ backup quarterback and a three-year letterman at Dayton under head coach Mike Kelly.

Professional Life and Career

During the 1985–86 season, Gruden was employed as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Tennessee after Jon graduated from the University of Dayton.

He worked as a quarterbacks coach at Southeast Missouri State for two years after his time with the Volunteers.

As an offensive assistant and tight-end coach, Gruden transferred to Pacific University in 1989.

Walt Harris, who later hired him at Pacific, was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee, where Gruden was one of his graduate assistant coaches.

For the San Francisco 49ers in 1990, Gruden served as quarterback coach Mike Holmgren’s special assistant.

Gruden joined the University of Pittsburgh as a large receiver coach under head coach Paul Hackett in March 1991.

Personalized Coaching

Gruden was hired by Mike Holmgren, his former boss with the San Francisco 49ers, in January 1992, when he was 28 years old, to work as the Green Bay Packers’ outstanding offensive assistant and wide receiver coach.

Utilizing the Oakland Raiders

Under Gruden, the Raiders had two outstanding 8-8 seasons in a row, vaulting them out of last place in the AFC West.

However, Oakland had a 12-4 record in 2000, its best record in ten years, and won the division for the first time since 1990.

Between 2000 and 2002, the Raiders qualified for the playoffs three times, but in 2001, they were upset by the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

Grady Jackson, a defensive lineman for the Raiders, though Gruden resembled the fictional character “Chucky” from the 1988 slasher film Child’s Play, gave him the nickname “Chucky.”

After three seasons in Green Bay, Ray Rhodes, a former Packers assistant coach, hired Jon to be the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Al Davis, the owner, and general manager of the Oakland Raiders, unexpectedly chose Gruden to take over as the team’s head coach for the 1998 campaign.

The most youthful head coach

Gruden became the youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl at the age of 39 thanks to the triumph.

“Pound the Rock” was Gruden’s catchphrase during the 2002 campaign, paying homage to his commitment to the running game.

Injury-related devastation of the team, which included several Super Bowl stars, like Greg Spires, Joe Jurevicius, Shelton Quarles, and Brian Kelly, led to animosity between veterans.

The Buccaneers became the first club since winning the Super Bowl XXXVII to have consecutive losing seasons when they finished 7-9 in 2003 and 5-11 in 2004.

On Monday Night Football, the club defeated the Indianapolis Colts 38-35 to claim their final Super Bowl XLIII victory.

After Tempa Bay, a career

In Tampa, Florida, Jon Gruden volunteered as Carrollwood Day School’s assistant offensive line coach.

Gruden established the Fired Football Coaches Association in 2010. The organization’s main office was rented space in a strip mall in Tampa.

Gruden dissolved the FFCA upon his return to coaching in 2018, even though several coaches, including Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer, Jim Haslett, Rick Venturi, Sean McVay, Greg Schiano, and Monte Kiffin, attended the screening and spoke with Gruden.

On January 6, 2018, the Raiders announced Gruden’s return as head coach following a nine-year absence from NFL coaching.

One of the biggest contracts in league history was inked by Gruden, who received a 10-year, $100 million deal. In his first season back with the organization, the squad would finish 4-12.

Gruden guided the Raiders to a 6-4 record thanks to an unstoppable and impressive rookie class performance.

However, the squad would finish their final season in Oakland 1-5 and 7-9 after numerous important players sustained injuries.

The agreement’s no-trade clause makes it a binding agreement, plugging the loophole that allowed the Raiders to move him to the Buccaneers for cash and draft picks.

Broadcasting Career | Jon Gruden

ESPN recruited Gruden in May 2009 to serve as a color analyst for its broadcasts of Monday Night Football.

Along with the 2010 Rose Bowl and 2010 BCS National Championship Game, he has also announced collegiate soccer matches on ESPN.

Gruden extended his agreement with ESPN in September 2012, making his current deal expire in 2021.

His final game for ESPN was the 2017 AFC Wild Card game between the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs.

Jon chose to leave ESPN after the 2017 season to coach for the Raiders during the 2018 NFL season. With a $9 million yearly compensation, he earns the most at ESPN.

Additionally, Jon Gruden is back with the Raiders and even said that he initially had no intention of leaving. Sources claim that Gruden agreed to a $10 million, ten-year contract with the Raiders.

“I’ve always wanted to stay with the Raiders. I never anticipated returning. But I’m here, and I’m prepared to start working. I also adore the Raiders. It is a worldwide brand. As a Monday Night Football analyst, the Raiders’ fan base would erupt everywhere I went.”

Additionally, Gruden stated that he would not accept compensation if he couldn’t accomplish his goals when he signed a ten-year contract with the franchise.

He made no further mention of the “objects” he meant. Gruden will earn a total of $100 million throughout his ten-year contract.

Hard Knocks, by Jon Gruden

In the 2019 installments of HBO’s Hard Knock program, Gruden made an appearance. The show’s August premiere was followed by its September conclusion.

Jon first gave a lecture to the rookies before the first episode’s introduction. He immediately admitted that he preferred nightmares to dreams. He also talked about his time in college.

Jon revealed his true personality as a coach and gave a brief overview of the second episode. In the third episode, Gruden shared a scene with Frank Caliendo.

The entire show was filled with laughs as Frank impersonated Gruden in the training facility.

He chuckled as he realized that his impression of Frank Caliendo also slightly irritated him.

The following episode had Gruden acting and training as an athlete. He was also pursuing Derek Carr at top speed.

By the end of episode five, which served as the season’s climax, Gruden was visibly upset.

As well as making a joke about Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, Gruden also displayed impressive athleticism.

Conditions Presented By Jon

Additionally, even though they were still dating, Gruden had made it obvious that he would not wed her until he was able to land a full-time position as a coach at a university.

As he previously stated, he put all of the money into his bank account and, when he got the job, bought her a ring.

Fast-forward to their nuptials, which took place on July 6, 1991; it has been more than 26 years since then.

Given they’re more than a two-decade-long union, the great fact that there is no controversy around their relationship makes admirers adore the couple even more.

Jon Gruden: Young people

Three kids total between Gruden and Brooks. Deuce Gruden, their firstborn, was born on January 19, 1994.

Deuce, unlike his father, chose a different path and even took part in the International Powerlifting Federation’s Minsk World Classic Powerlifting Championships.

Their shared children’s birth dates are uncertain, however, they have two further boys with the names Michael and Jayson Gruden.

In 2018, the father revealed,

“My youngest son, Jayson, participated in the quarterback camp, and then my middle son, Michael, who’s going to be a freshman in Tennessee this fall.”

The family is content and shows no signs of discord. Jon and his wife are living a nice life and appear content, along with their kids.
