Professional Career
Jones entered the UFC with a 7-0 record and took a fight against Andre Gusmao on short notice on August 9, 2008. He was a substitute fighter, but he made use of the opportunity to show off his abilities.
On January 31, 2009, he faced Stephen Bonnar, a seasoned veteran, in his next UFC battle. Unfortunately for both competitors, the contest was not even close, since Jones was still an underdog heading in.
But, with his incredible spinning back elbow and suplex that night, ‘Bones’ demonstrated he could also confront a senior fighter. As a consequence, Jon was declared the winner by a unanimous vote.
In 2012, he defeated Brandon Vera and Vladimir Matyushenko after winning his first championship against three-time champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
The most difficult fight Jon Jones has ever faced was against Swedish fighter Alexander Gustafson at UFC 165 on September 23, 2013. Jones won despite suffering lacerations and facial swelling.

Controversies
The US Anti-Doping Agency charged the MMA fighter with a possible drug violation (USADA). He tested positive for Turinabol as well as the “B” sample, which likewise tested positive.
He was even forced to surrender his Light Heavyweight belt and faced a four-year suspension.
After a night of drinking, Jon was engaged in a minor accident on May 19, 2012, when he crashed his automobile into a pole in Binghamton, New York.
Jones was arrested after refusing to undergo a sobriety test. Two months later, he was required to pay a $1,000 fine, and his driver’s license was suspended for six months.
Similarly, Jon got involved in another huge scandal in 2014. He was fined $50,000 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NCAC) following a fight with Daniel Cormier at a UFC 178 press event.
Following New Mexico police claims, Jones became the lead suspect in a hit-and-run incident in early 2015. As a result, he was unable to compete against Anthony Johnson that year.
The event resulted in him receiving an 18-month prison sentence and the UFC stripping him of his championship. Jones was also accused of sending homophobic remarks to a Swedish fan on Instagram in 2014. Jon was arrested again in March 2020 for DUI and careless use of a handgun.
Jon Jone & Matt Hamill
When Jones was disqualified in a fight against Matt Hamill in December 2009, several arguments and issues erupted.
Jon employed a devastating elbow technique (12-6) in which the elbow is utilized to hit an opponent.
Because this tactic is prohibited in the UFC, referee Steve Mazzagatti called the bout off and awarded the victory to Matt Hamill.
Dana White, the UFC president, was disappointed by the decision and declared an elbow to the ground; they deducted Jone’s claim. He also stated that it was Hamill’s shoulder injury that prevented him from continuing the fight, not Jone’s elbow.
Hamill dislocated his shoulder during his battle with Jon. Unfortunately, referee Steve didn’t see it coming, and this loss will never be wiped from Jones’ record.
