American singer, songwriter, and trained chef Kelis Rogers-Mora is better known by her stage name, Kelis.

Early Life, Education, and Family

On August 21, 1979, Kelis Rogers was born in Harlem, New York. She is a Christian and has the sign of Leo. The vocalist started learning the classical violin at age two. She began performing with her father, American jazz pianist Kenneth Rogers, at the age of four.

The Frederick Douglass Houses neighborhood of Manhattan’s Harlem is where Kelis Rogers was born and reared. Her first name is a combination of her mother Eveliss and her father Kenneth. Kenneth, her father, was a Pentecostal minister, jazz pianist, and former Wesleyan University professor. He was also an African-American.

Kelis was motivated to pursue her singing career by her mother Eveliss, a fashion designer of Chinese and Puerto Rican descent. Kelis, the third of the four girls to be born, is one of her three sisters.

Manhattan Country School is where Kelis completed her elementary education. She subsequently attended Fiorella H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts. There, she acquired the skills to play a variety of musical instruments, and after graduating in 1997, she entered the professional music industry.

Career

Early Career

The R&B group BLU was founded by Kelis when he was a high school student. After leaving high school, she ran into Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the band The Neptunes. They were moved by her artistry and assisted her in obtaining a record deal with Virgin Records in 1998. The following year, in 1999, Kelis finished and released her self-titled debut album.

The album reached the top five on the Top Heatseekers list and peaked at number 144 on the US Billboard 200 chart. Her most prominent single from the album was “Caught Out There,” which peaked at number ten on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts. The album did better overall in Europe, where it peaked at number 43 on the UK Albums list.

Rise To Stardom

The BRIT Award for International Breakthrough Act and the NME Award for Best R&B/Soul Act were both given to Kelis in 2001. She accompanied Moby and later U2 on their tours, enhancing her reputation in Europe.

In 2001, Kelis released her second album, “Wanderland,” outside of the US, in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Around this time, she was no longer signed to Virgin Records. Despite the record’s lack of economic success, it received favorable reviews in magazines including “The Guardian” and “NME.”

She started composing songs for her forthcoming third album, “Tasty.” Her single, “Milkshake,” which peaked at number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart and third on the Billboard Hot 100, brought her mainstream fame in the United States. Eventually, the album was awarded gold certification in the US. In 2004, Kelis’ song “Milkshake” received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. In the UK, the album achieved platinum status.

Kelis Was Here

Later in August 2006, Jive Records issued Kelis’ fourth studio album, “Kelis Was Here.” The album opened at number ten on the Billboard 200 and peaked there. Its main hit, “Bossy,” achieved multi-platinum status and garnered a lot of radio play. The album was a 2007 Grammy Award nominee for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

Then, in 2010, Interscope Records issued her fifth album, “Flesh Tone.” Along with others like Diplo, David Guetta, and Benny Benassi, she collaborated with producer will.i.am. Immediately following its release, she started her first U.S. tour and performed at notable events like Glastonbury and Good Vibrations Festival. A few years later, she started collaborating with director David Sitek. In April 2014, she released her following album, titled “Food.” 2019 saw the rerelease of “Wanderland,” Kelis’ second studio album, making it finally accessible in the US. In 2020, she started a 20th-anniversary tour in support of “Kaleidoscope,” her debut album.

The couple’s baby was born a few months after Kelis gave birth, who was seven months along at the time. According to Kelis, Nas physically and mentally abused her, and she made the decision to end the marriage before becoming pregnant for the sake of her unborn baby.

The couple has been embroiled in a protracted custody battle for their kid.

Photographer Mike Mora and Kelis got married in 2014. In November 2015, the couple welcomed their son. Outside of Los Angeles, on a farm since January 2020, Kelis and Mora have been residing. In September 2020, she had a daughter.

In September 2021, Mora made a statement revealing that he was battling advanced stomach cancer.
