Olynyk was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, but he was later traded to the Boston Celtics.

Then, in July 2013, he penned his rookie contract with the Celtics.

In roughly 70 games during the 2013–14 season, Olynyk averaged 8.7 points and 5.2 rebounds, earning him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

The following month, in December 2015, he defeated the Golden State Warriors and scored a season-high 28 points.

He consequently missed nearly six games in the 2016–17 season due to a right shoulder injury. He then made his Boston Celtics debut against the Washington Wizards on November 9, 2016.
