In 2002 Kendrys won Rookie of the year while pitching full season setting seven rookie records in the process. And his First- of two or half- full seasons with Havana’s Industries of Cuban National Series his batting average of 324 with 21 home runs and 82 runs batted in.

Moving on the United States

Kendrys career in Cuba was of a very short period. He was banned from National Team and industries for Disciplinary reasons. And where assumed that Kendrys met with few agents to flee from the nation.

As per the statement given by Kendrys in one of his interviews

That’s not true. I never talked to any agent. But from that moment on, I just wanted to leave. I tried to do it several times without success, occasionally ending up in jail.”

In 2004, during his eighth attempt, Kendrys finally escaped from Cuba to Southern Florida.

Kendrys chose to leave Florida to establish foreign residency as so to avoid the MLB draft, He left for the Dominican Republic. Kendrys was privately looking up Major League Teams. He ended up signing with Preston Gomez for US$ 3 million for 6 years From December 2004.

Professional Career

Minor League Career

In Spring 2005 Kendrys was supposed to play for Angels in the Cactus League to get set for a quick rise through their farm system or possibly the team-specified hitter. But He was not a citizen of the Dominican yet. So he flew back to the US for a few months.

On May 21, He debut in Minor League. He become a star player in Angels and three weeks later he moved up to Double-A Arkansas and was second on the team to hit most home runs after playing half of the season. Angels choose Kendrys to play at Arizona Fall League.

In 2006 Kendrys went through intense training during spring but he didn’t make it to the 25-man roaster. On May 23, 2006, Kendrys debuted in Major League against the Texas Rangers while playing first base and hit a home run second at-bat.

2009 Season

The 2009 Season was the breakout season for Kendrys. He played extremely well in his first season.

He had 34 home runs and slugged 569 rankings second in AL. Kendrys was upheld to the first baseman after Angels’ first baseman Mark Teixeira.

He played well in the first half of the season but the second half of the season was extraordinary and was named player of the month in August.

His performance led to him being MVP of the American League in the top 5 after Joe Mauer, Mark Teixeira, Derek Jeter, Miguel Cabrera

2010 Season

On May 29, 2010, Kendrys hit off a walk grand slam while claiming victory against the Seattle Mariners at the Angle Stadium of Anaheim.

During his celebration with his teammates, he jumped off, intending of stomping on the home plate but unfortunately, he stepped on it.

Kendrys’ Landing cause him an injury which led him to lower left leg surgery. He was immediately listed as in disabled player and with this, he missed his 2010 Season.

2011 Season

Kendrys missed his 2011 Season too due to his ankle complication which cause him while he was in the rehabilitation of his left leg surgery

2012 Season

In March 2012 after 2 years of a leg injury, Kendrys returned to the spring training game. In April he hit his first home run after his return. On July 23, he become of the three MLB players to ever hit a home run with both of his hands- left and right in the same inning.

Seattle Mainers

Angels traded Kendrys to Seattle Mainers for American Pitcher Jason Vargas on December 19, 2012. In the 10th inning against Oakland Athletics on June 23, 2013, Kendrys hit his first pitch three home runs.

In August 2013, Kendrys was claimed by an unknown team from Seattle Mainers but he was not traded by the team. And within 48 hours of the claim Mainers get him back by the unknown claim.

On September 4, while playing against Kansas City Royals, Kendrys in his ninth-inning hit a walk-off home run and the Seattle Mainers won the game.

Minnesota Twins

Kendrys in his 2013 season declined Seattle Mainers’ offers and remained unsigned during opening day. After that, on June 8, 2014, Kendrys agreed on an offer with the Minnesota Twins on a one-year contract and an allocation portion of $12 million, worth $7.4 million approximately.

Return to Seattle Mariners

After a year of contract with the Twins,  Kendrys traded back to Mariners in exchange for American pitcher Stephen Pryor.

Kansas City Royals

In December 2014 Kendrys signed a contract with Kansas City Royals for 2 years worth $17million.

In 2015 Kendrys won Edgar Martinez  Award, awarded annually to the American League’s most outstanding designated hitter.

With the outstanding 2015 season, he struggled to start of 2016 season with an average of 193 before June.

After taking a few games of break, he finished the 2016 season with an average of 262 with leading home run hitter for the Royals.

On November 4, Kendrys declined an offer with the Royals and became a free agent. He signed a contract with Toronto Blue Jays for 3 years worth $33 million on 11 November 2016.

On August 31, 2017, while playing against Baltimore Orioles, Kendrys became the first player in Toronto franchise history to have four hits, three home runs, and seven RBIs.

He debuted himself as a pitcher in Major League on 20 May 2018. On July 8, 2018, Kendrys hits his 200th home run.

Kendrys is one of the seventh players in MLB history to have a seven-game home run streak, starting from the August 19 streak until August 26. His exceptional achievements from August 20 to August 26 earned him the American League’s Player of the Week Award.
