On April 26, 1965, Kevin James was born in Mineola, New York. His father, Joseph Valentine Knipfing Jr., owned an insurance agency, while his mother, Janet, worked at an office. James has a sister named Leslie and an older brother named Gary Valentine, a comedian and actor.
His upbringing was in Stony Brook, New York. James used to wrestle and play football while he was a student at Ward Melville School in 1983. He attended New York State University. But he left school before graduating.

In 1989, James made his stand-up comedy debut at the East Side Comedy Club on Long Island. His numerous appearances on various talk shows, such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Dennis Miller Live, The Late Late Show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, helped him gain popularity.

James’ first television role was in The New Candid Camera in 1991. In 1994, he had an appearance in A&E’s An Evening at the Improv. From 1994 to 1996, James made television appearances as the announcer for the MTV sports game show SandBlast.
He appeared as a guest star on multiple episodes of “Everybody Loves Raymond” after relocating to Los Angeles and becoming friends with Ray Romano. James’ major break came in 1998 when he was selected to play Doug Heffernan, the main character, in the CBS sitcom “The King of Queens.”
Kevin James made his acting debut in the romantic comedy Hitch in 2005, joining Will Smith and Eva Mendes after appearing in a cameo in 50 First Dates in 2004. James was not just a star of movies, but also the writer and producer of the hugely successful movie “Mall Cop.”
He co-starred with Vince Vaughn in the comedy-drama The Dilemma in 2011, and then he created and produced the Rosario Dawson film Zookeeper. James starred as the main character in the mixed martial arts comedy Here Comes the Boom in 2012. Additionally, he appeared in the 2015 film Pixels and the 2016 film True Memoirs of an International Assassin.

During the 2007 Pepsi 400 NASCAR Cup Series stock car race, James served as the grand marshal while promoting his movie “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry.” He reprised this role in 2010 to advertise “Grown Ups,” in 2012 to promote “Here Comes the Boom” at the fall Talladega race, and in 2013 to promote “Grown Ups 2” at the Coke-Zero 400.
James reactivated his November 27, 2017–launched YouTube channel in February 2020.
