Kevin Martin is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association for 12 seasons.

The Sacramento Kings, who had the 26th pick, selected Martin in the first round. During his rookie season, he was also a backup point guard, seeing only 10 minutes of action in 45 regular-season games.

The following season, his role as a shooting guard shifted dramatically.

Despite this, the second-year guard came through in the clutch, hitting a legendary buzzer-beater shot over Tim Duncan to win the third match of the series.

They did, however, lose the series 4-2 in overtime.

Contract Extension and Breakout Campaign

Martin was promoted to the starting lineup by the Kings’ head coach, Eric Musselman, after a strong postseason performance.

He improved from 10.8 points, 1.3 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game to 20.2 points, 2.2 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game. Despite this, he was unable to help the Kings achieve a winning season.

Sacramento later signed him to a five-year, $55 million contract on August 28, 2007.

For the 2007-08 season, Sacramento fired Eric Musselman and replaced him with Reggie Theus. As a result, Martin was assigned to the bench as a backup guard by the new head coach.

As the team’s sixth man, he averaged 23.7 points per game after accepting the position. Similarly, the following season, he averages a career-high 24.6 points per game.

Houston Rockets

On February 18, 2010, Houston acquired Martin in a three-way trade with the Knicks and the Kings. He was the Rockets’ starting shooting guard.

He, too, had a disappointing debut, scoring 14 points on 3-16 shooting.

In addition, he redeemed himself by scoring 39 points in his first game back in Sacramento.

He also finished the season with a 23.5 point per game average. Not to mention, he averaged 7.4 free throws per game, ranking second in the NBA only to Kevin Durant.

The star was sidelined early in the following season due to a shoulder injury.

Despite this, he returned, but the ailment reappeared, forcing him to miss the rest of the season.

Oklahoma City Thunder

On October 27, 2012, Martin was traded by the Rockets to the Thunder in exchange for future NBA star James Harden.

Furthermore, the Thunder were a title contender in need of bench depth. As a result, Martin provided a significant amount of firepower to the second line.

The Thunder, on the other hand, were defeated by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2012-13 Western Conference Semifinals.

Minnesota Timberwolves

On July 2, 2013, the NBA player agreed to terms with the Timberwolves on a four-year, $28 million contract.

K-mart quickly established himself as an important team player and one of the team’s leading scorers. In the third season, however, he underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his right wrist.

As a result, Kevin missed the entire season and was later waived as part of a Timberwolves buyout agreement.

San Antonio Spurs

On March 9, 2016, the Spurs signed Martin to a one-year contract. Similarly, the Spurs signed him to bolster their offensive firepower.

Martin delivered on his promise and established himself as a team offensive option.

Many fans were pleased with the signing as well, believing he would help the team make a deep playoff run.

However, the Oklahoma City Thunder eliminated them from the playoffs in the Western Conference semi-finals.

Martin announced his retirement from competitive basketball on November 24, 2016, as a result of this loss.
