American-Australian professional basketball player Leilani Seamah Mitchell is presently a free agent. The Phoenix Mercury selected Mitchell with the 25th overall pick in the 2008 WNBA draft.

She is a player for the Australian women’s national basketball team and holds dual citizenship with the United States and Australia.

An American-Australian professional basketball player, Leilani Mitchell was born on June 15, 1985, in Richard, Washington, United States.

Although her father is American, her mother is Australian. She has five brothers: Robbie, Tyler, Troy, Travis, Reggie, and Rob.

Mitchell’s father, an American called Dennis Mitchell, competed in the 4 x 100-meter relay and took home a gold medal in the 1992 Summer Olympics.

In 2009, her mother’s cancer took her life.

She went to high school there in Kennewick, Washington. At Kennewick High School, Mitchell has been selected to the first team in both in the conference and the state as a junior and a senior.

Leilani Mitchell | Career

In high school in Kennewick, Washington, Leilani Mitchell began playing basketball. She later played basketball at the University of Idaho.

She did, however, change schools to the University of Utah for her senior year. Mitchell gained great experience and rose to national recognition in her junior year.

From 2005–06, she received All-America recognition from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association of America and the Associated Press.

Mitchell progressed to the semifinals of the Nancy Lieberman Award competition, which honors the best point guard in the country.

She also established a school record with 118 steals, and her 178 assists ranked fourth in Idaho’s record book for a single season.

She also ranked third on the school’s list with 168 free throws made.

Professional Career

Moreover, Leilani Mitchell began her career on June 6, 2008.  The Phoenix Mercury chose Lei in place of the injured Loree Moore in the second round of the 2008 WNBA Draft.

She was, though, traded to the New York Liberty during the preseason of 2008.

Career-best Points Range

Mitchell made her professional basketball debut in 2008 against the Houston Comets, scoring a team-high 18 points on a perfect 6-6 shooting night, including 3-3 from three-point range.

She experienced a breakout season in the WNBA in 2010, and after Liberty fired Moore in the postseason, she took over as the season’s regular starting point guard.

Mitchell averages 9.3 and 3.8 points per game while dishing out 3.8 assists.

She also had 14 games with 10 or more points, and she tops the club in three-point field goal %. (48.6). It was against the Tulsa Shock when she scored 20 points for the first time.

In 2010, she received the WNBA’s Most Improved Player award. Her 24-point performance on September 2, 2011, against the Minnesota Lynx, was the greatest score of her career.

As the Mercury finished the season 15-19 and were seeded eighth in the league, Mitchell finished the year by averaging double figures in points for the first time in her basketball career.

Mitchell won the WNBA Most Improved Player Award for the second consecutive year in 2019.

In February 2020, Mitchell signed a free-agent contract with the Mystics, and on September 4, 2020, she recorded her second career double with 20 points and a career-high 12 assists.

International Career

Leilani Mitchell has competed for ASPTT Arras in the Ligue Féminine de Basketball (LFB), a French professional league, during the WNBA off-season.

She won the Import Player of the Year Award in 2009–10 and was chosen for the LFB First Team.

In the 2012–2013 season, Mitchell played for KK Novi Zagreb in the Croatian League. Since 2013, she has competed in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).

Since the 2014 World Championships, when Australia’s national team, the “Opals,” won bronze, Mitchell has competed for Australia.

She competed for Australia’s senior squad in the 2016 Summer Olympics, where they lost in the quarterfinals.
