During his redshirt sophomore season, Cushenberry succeeded as the Tigers’ starting center, playing in 13 games. Cushenberry made a total of fifteen starts as a redshirt junior after that.
For 28 straight games, Cushenberry and right guard Damien Lewis were teammates on the field. He received the No. 18 jersey as an offensive lineman for the first time in school history.

Instead of finishing his last year of college, Cushenberry entered the 2020 NFL Draft. He was also chosen by the Denver Broncos in the third round with the 83rd overall pick.

On September 14, 2020, against the Tennessee Titans, Cushenberry played in his first NFL game. He also played in Week 17 of the same year. Throughout his career, Cushenberry was chosen for the Professional Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie Team for the 2020 NFL season.
