He carefully opened a gym and other readily available resources through his PPR endeavor for his son to pursue his vocation.

Professional Life and Career

Wayns played basketball for the high school squad at Roman Catholic High School. During his junior year, he recorded 22.4 points, 5.1 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 steals.

The player was twice named Philadelphia Catholic League MVP and was named to the first team for both the city and state of Pennsylvania.

Career in College

Wayns joined Villanova University’s basketball team and participated there.

He also won the Big East Rookie of the Week award three times while being named to the Big East All-Rookie Team.

In November of his sophomore year, with 12 points and 12 assists, he notched his first double-double.

With 17.6 points after his junior season, Wayns was selected for the Big East second team.

Professional Career

Maalik Wayns wasn’t selected in the 2012 NBA Draft. When the Orlando Summer League began, he then joined the Magic.

He also joined the Golden State Warriors in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Later on, in July 2012, he signed a contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, who later waived him in January 2013.

It’s interesting to note that after just two days, he re-signed a 10-day contract with the 76ers and then passed up the chance to do the same after that deal expired.

He was acquired by the NBA Development League team Rio Grande Valley Vipers in January 2013.

Similarly, Wayns signed a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Clippers in March 2013 and remained with them for the remainder of the campaign.

In January 2014, the Clippers waived Wayns, who later agreed to a 10-day deal with them.

The Rio then got him again, Grande Valley Vipers, after the Clippers had released him.

Various Teams

He agreed to a one-year deal with Zalgiris Kaunas of the Lithuanian Basketball League in July 2014.

Wayns was acquired by the Delaware 87ers in a trade in January 2015, and he joined the team in full in February.

The rest of the season was spent with Atenienses de Manat, with whom he then traveled to Puerto Rico.

Wayns traversed the world playing for various international teams before joining Pallacanestro Varese of the Italian Serie A for the 2015–16 campaign.

He signed a contract with the Russian team Enisey Krasnoyarsk for the 2016–17 campaign. Then, in November 2016, he took a plane to Israel and joined the Maccabi Rishon Lesion team.

He signed with the Dallas Mavericks in August 2017, but after they released him, he decided to play the rest of the 2017–18 ACB season with Joventut Badalona in Spain.

In August 2019 and February 2020, Wayns joined Tsmoki-Minsk of the VTB United League and Mahram Tehran BC of the Iranian Basketball Super League, respectively.

Competition in basketball

Wayns participated for Team FOE in The Basketball Tournament on ESPN in the summer of 2017.

In his two games, he averaged 10.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, helping Team FOE advance to the Super 16 Round in Brooklyn.

Wayns also participated for FOE in 2016, scoring 18.0 points, pulling down 4.7 rebounds, and dishing out 3.3 assists per game.


Wayns, a guard player who was excelling while with the Los Angeles Clippers, tore his meniscus and required surgery.

Wayns, who had a non-guaranteed contract and was competing for a roster spot, regrettably tore his left meniscus during a preseason game.

He tweeted in the interim to keep his motivation up.

He insisted, “You’ve got to approach this with a new perspective #builtdifferent. It’s all about the get back.”

Career in Coaching

Wayns retires from playing and chooses to take on the great responsibility of coaching.

He started working on the Student-Athlete Development staff for the Villanova Men’s Basketball team as soon as the 2020–21 season was over.
