Machine Gun Kelly | Early Life, Family & Education

On the 22nd of April, 1990, Richard Colson Baker was born in Houston, Texas. Because both of his parents were missionaries, he spent a lot of his childhood traveling with his family. When they were young, the family moved to several different countries, including Egypt, Germany, and others. Baker also lived in several other US states.

Baker’s mother moved out when he was nine years old, and he and his father moved to Denver to live with Baker’s aunt.

Baker began using words as a form of retribution after being bullied as a young person. He finally fell in love with rap and started making his own music.

Later, he attended Hamilton Middle School before transferring to Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver. He tried drugs while still in high school. He simultaneously recorded Stamp of Approval, his first amateur demo cassette, during this time.

Machine Gun Kelly | Career

Starting off his career

Baker convinced an MC management to support him in starting his career after returning to the United States and completing high school. In recognition of his quick-fire vocal delivery, Baker at this point decided to go by the stage name “Machine Gun Kelly.” MGK first appeared in small-town settings before appearing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. He additionally made an appearance on MTV2’s Sucker Free Freestyle.

Then he dropped his second mixtape, 100 Words and Running. MGK’s financial situation was still terrible at this point, despite his growing notoriety. His father forced him out of the house, he had a daughter of his own, and he had to work at Chipotle to make ends meet.

When the song “Alice in Wonderland” was published, MGK made a significant advancement. Before the release of his new mixtape, Lace Up, the song helped him become more well-known and win multiple honors.

One of the songs on the CD was written for the Cleveland Cavaliers when they played at home. After their great run, MGK and Juicy J worked together on the track “Inhale.”

Sean Combs approached MGK in 2011 and persuaded him to join the record company Bad Boy Records.

Debut Studio Album

MGK’s debut studio album, Lace Up, was finally ready to be released in 2012. Hit singles including “Invincible” and “Wild Boy” were on the album, which also included contributions from DMX, Twista, and Tech N9ne.

He worked on a mixtape called Black Flag that year with a variety of musicians, including Pusha T and Meek Mill. General Admission, MGK’s second studio album, was finally published in 2015 after several protracted delays.

The popular song “Bad Things” was co-written by MGK and Camila Cabello in 2016. 2019 saw the release of Hotel Diablo, MGK’s fourth studio album.

The album, which debuted at number five on the charts, featured the singles “I Think I’m Okay” and “Glass House.”

He also declared in the same year that Tickets to my Downfall, a collaboration album with Travis Barker, will be published in 2020.

Feud with Eminem

A tweet from MGK in 2012 referred to Eminem‘s 16-year-old daughter as “sexy.” After waiting more than a year to see the tweet, Eminem made the decision to compose a song that was a diss track directed at MGK.

As the feud continued on, Eminem eventually prohibited MGK from participating in his web radio program. One of MGK’s most popular Eminem diss songs is Rap Devil, which was released in 2018. Eminem retaliated to “Rap Devil” on September 14 with his own diss song, “Killshot.”

Acting Career

Baker made his acting debut in the 2014 romance drama Beyond the Lights as Kid Culprit, a rapper who was described as “shallow, self-important.” Since then,  MGK has acted in movies like Big Time Adolescence, The Land, Bird Box, and The Dirt. Aside from that, he has starred in Wild ‘n Out on MTV.

Awards and Achievements

At the 2010 Underground Music Awards, MGK’s tune “Alice in Wonderland” helped him win the Best Midwest Artist honor. The 2010 Ohio Hip-Hop Awards also gave it the Best Music Video award.

Also, MTV named MGK as the Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011 in December.

Again, MGK got the MTV Breaking Woodie Award in March 2012.
