Even though Smith had never played in Double-A, the Braves invited him to camp. As the 2015 season got underway, Mallex started appearing in 57 matches for the Mississippi Braves.

However, he was promoted to the Class AAA Professional League’s Gwinnett Braves in June. By year’s end, Mallex had reached Class AAA and had even been named the Braves Minor League Player of the Year.

Accordingly, Mallex started the 2016 season in the Gwinnett before getting a promotion to the big leagues on April 11.
