Folau started playing netball during her school years and showed an immediate deep love and passion for the game.

She was regarded as one of the most active students in both her high school and college.

Thanks to her athletic frame and her abilities, she quickly rose to the position of the star on the team she played for before beginning a professional career in the sport.

Her ability to coach the college’s first Premier netball team to victory was equally impressive.

Maria Folau | Professional Life and Career

While playing for the Auckland Diamonds from 2005 to 2007, Folau began her professional netball career.

However, she had started playing netball at her college, where she rose to the position of captaining MAGS’s inaugural Premier netball squad.

At the NISS and NZSS Championships, her leadership enabled the team to successfully claim fourth place.

She joined the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in 2008 after signing a contract with them. In the shooting circle, she teamed up with Irene Van Dyk.

Before moving to Auckland to join the Northern Mystics in 2010, she spent two years playing as a Magic.

Later that year, in Miami, she helped her team win the World Youth Cup, a significant victory for the youthful team.

Her remarkable game awareness and talent allowed her to make the silver Ferns team. She appeared in court later, while the Ferns were touring Jamaica.

Maria competed for the Silver Ferns throughout their victories in 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2010 World Netball Championships.

Her great performance in each of these competitions demonstrates that she was among the top netball players in the world as well as in New Zealand.

In the Australian Super Netball League for the 2019 season, Maria signed on with the Adelaide Thunderbirds in 2018.

She left the team at the end of the season, but she was still able to lead the team in goals and win the best and fairest award for the team.


Maria competed in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2019 netball World Cup on behalf of New Zealand before she retired.

Folau left the national and international netball teams at the end of 2019. The retirement announcement was made by Netball New Zealand.

Up until the end of her netball career, she was able to accrue 150 Silver Ferns caps, moving her into second place among all-time cap holders behind Laura Langman.
