Mark DeRosa is a popular American former professional baseball player as well as a studio analyst. He is well-known for playing in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1998 to 2013, for a variety of franchise teams including the Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and others.

Early life, Childhood, and Education

He was born on 26th February 1975 in Passaic, New Jersey, United States of America, to his father, Jack DeRosa, and her mother whose name is still unknown.

Initially, Mark was picked in the 7th round of the 1996 Major League Baseball Draft by the Atlanta Braves after playing collegiate baseball. Although, he made his Major League Baseball debut as a shortstop on 2nd September 1998.

Despite being picked by the Braves, Mark spent the majority of his tenure with the team from 1998 to 2001 as a backup pitcher.

After a couple of years as a backup after Vinny Castilla’s departure, DeRosa finally got the starting spot.  Later on, The Braves failed to sign him to a contract for the 2005 season, therefore ending his career.

Professional Career

Later on, he signed with the Texas Rangers. Due to injuries, he delayed his starting lineup. Finally, he got the opportunity to play to start over in May 2006. DeRosa scored his career-high 74 points for his team Texas Rangers.

Additionally, DeRosa signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Cubs on 14th November 2006. Although, he played 149 games for the cubs and recorded ten home runs along with 74 RBIs.

The Cubs traded DeRosa to the Cleveland Indians in 2008. He played for the New Jersey native and played as a third base for the Indians for the first time.

Mark DeRosa became the #7 of the Cleveland Indians in the field against the New York Yankees.

After that, Cleveland Indians traded DeRosa to St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Chris Perez and Jess Todd on 27th June 2009.

Health Issue

Suddenly, Mark DeRosa was admitted to a hospital on 23rd February 2008, after he had trouble breathing and a rapid heartbeat.

Later on, he completed the heart procedure to improve his irregular heartbeat. Therefore, DeRosa got his nickname “The Pulse.”

After a successful recovery in his health in 2008, he scored his career-high points with 21 home runs and 87 RBIs.


Meanwhile, the former Cleveland third base player was put on the disabled list because of his wrist injury.

DeRosa had to undergo surgery to repair a torn tendon sheath on 26th October 2010. Furthermore, DeRosa turned down the Cardinals’ offer of salary negotiation in 2010.

Later on, he signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants. After that, he went for a medical examination, and the injured athlete found out that his earlier wrist surgery and been a case of total negligence.

Meanwhile, his club The Giants announced that he had to go through a long-term surgery. Similarly, DeRosa injured the same wrist that had been operated on earlier.

Finally, the third base swinger appeared in The Giant’s field for the last season on 4th August 2011. DeRosa was put on the disabled list on 29th April 2012, due to muscle strain.

DeRosa signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on 22nd January 2013. The former professional baseball player hit his 100th home run on 27th July 2013.

He solely led the team to an advantage point in the second inning. Meanwhile, he played as a pinch-hitter, third base, second base, first base, and a designated hitter for the Blue Jays in the 2013 season.

Later on, his club the Blue Jays decided to extend the contract with DeRosa on 27th July 2013. Unfortunately, it was announced on 12th November 2013, that DeRosa would be retiring.

MLB Network Career

After this retirement, he worked as a studio analyst on the MLB Network. At present, he serves as a co-host and an analyst on the weekday morning show, MLB Central, in company with Robert Flores and Lauren Shehadi.

Apart from this, he was also the broadcast announcer for the MLB video game franchise, MLB: The Show.
