Who is Mat Fraser? Childhood, Parents, Education, and Nationality

Don Fraser and Candace Jones, two former Canadian Olympic figure skaters, were the parents of the CrossFit athlete. Fraser’s mother practiced medicine near Sharbot Lake, where he spent most of his youth.

The family then relocated to Colchester, Vermont, in the United States. The majority of Fraser’s education was completed in American schools. Likewise, Fraser holds Canadian-American nationality.

Being athletic at an early age, he picked up various activities including swimming, water skiing, downhill, and even doing a handstand climb up the stairs at the age of five.

When Mat Fraser was twelve years old, his interest in weightlifting began to grow as he witnessed his instructor using weights to compete with a buddy.

He was later introduced to a weightlifting instructor who taught him the right technique for lifting weights. Mat Fraser received his high school diploma from Colchester.

He started full-time Olympic weightlifting training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs after graduating on a scholarship.

Later, following his injury, he enrolled at Northern Michigan University’s Olympic Education Center. He concentrated on studying math and physics there as he recovered from surgery. In Vermont, Mat Fraser studied mechanical engineering and engineering management simultaneously.

Similar to this, he minored in both business and mathematics at the University of Vermont in Burlington. Fraser had made a name for himself as a CrossFit competitor in addition to receiving degrees in engineering and business.

Mat Fraser, a junior national champion and former Olympic weightlifter, made his CrossFit Games debut in 2014. Fraser joined CrossFit while seeking a better setting to train in Olympic lifts. He was inspired to participate in CrossFit contests and started doing so in 2013, starting with regional tournaments.

Fraser could place sixth in the CrossFit North East Regionals despite only having a few months of CrossFit training. Such a record, though, wasn’t enough to earn a spot in the CrossFit Games.

In 2014, Mat Fraser competed in and won the North East Regionals, which brought him to the public’s attention. At his first CrossFit Games, he finished second to Rich Froning.

In both Midline March and Thick ‘N’ Quick, he came in second place. He received the Rookie of the Year title with such a stellar record in just a few months.

Rich Froning, Mat Fraser’s opponent, retired, hence it was believed that Mat Fraser would win the 2015 CrossFit Games.

He cited his second-place finish and loss to Ben Smith as his worst failures and most tragic setbacks. He said that the situation had taught him a lesson that he would think about for the rest of his life.

Rise as a Champion

Mat Fraser routinely outperformed himself in the 2016 CrossFit Games competitions by taking stock of his mistakes and failings and learning from them. Even though he only placed second in one event and finished in the top 10 in nearly all others, he did win that one.

He passed Ben Smith with a lead of 197 points, the largest margin of victory in the CrossFit Games’ history. He dominated the 2017 CrossFit Games, winning four of the last eight events, much like the year before.

The first time more than one event was won in a single game was because of his success. In the same vein, Matt Fraser successfully defended his championship in the 2018 CrossFit Games 2018.

But at the CrossFit Games, he had to compete against Noah Ohlsen, a formidable foe. Despite having two victories to open the race, he faltered on day 2. Despite these obstacles and difficulties, he managed to win the competition and become the champion for the fourth time.
