Hamilton began curling as a teen with his sister, Becca. Curling was introduced to them by their father, who used to take them while he was playing.

One of the members once asked Scott Hamilton, “Does he play?” while Matt was watching his father play. Matt began playing the next day, immediately following that question.

His sister eventually joined him as he began curling every day. They first learned the skill together at the Madison Curling Club in McFarland.

Junior and Early Days

Matt Hamilton began his curling career as Jeremy Roe’s skip (captain) at the 2007 and 2008 United States Men’s National Championships.

Later that year, he joined Chris Plys’ junior team and helped them win two Junior National Championships in a row in 2008 and 2009.

Matt then competed in the 2009 World Junior Championships, which were held at the Vancouver Olympic Centre. He was unable to defend his title, and thus finished with a bronze medal.

He then competed in the 2009 United States Olympic Trials, and by the end of the year, he was back on Jeremy Roe’s team as third. Matt rejoined Paul Pustovar in 2011.

He also competed in the 2011 US Men’s Curling Championship as the team’s second through the Medford qualifier and the challenge round. When the Nationals arrived, Matt took over as skipper.

Matt later joined Craig Brown as a third for three seasons as the new season began. Matt won his first men’s championship medal with them, a silver medal at the 2014 National Championship.

Post Olympics Days

After the Olympics, when George announced his intention to take a break from curling, Matt took his place as the team’s third. Following that, the team went on to win gold at the 2019 United States Men’s Championship.

However, in the same year’s World Men’s Championship, they were defeated by Japan and finished fifth.

The following year, in 2020, they went undefeated and defended their US title at the 2020 US Men’s Championship.

This gave them the opportunity to compete in the Champion’s Cup and the World Men’s Curling Championship. Unfortunately, due to the novel coronavirus, all of these events were postponed.

Matt Hamilton recently competed in the 2021 World Men’s Curling Championship. They did, however, compete in the playoff games against Switzerland
